Float rod for trent

Justin Martin

Senior Member
Hi am looking for some advice really want to spend upto 100quid on float rod for using mainly on Trent for barbel chub etc but also on lakes now and again I've been looking at the greys tx 13ft specialist float anyone use one of these or other recommendations don't mind new or secondhand just something that's unto the job
Thks in advance justin

Justin I've been using the greys prodigy vx specialist 15 foot float rod , used it for roach but also had barbel to 8lb 8oz on it , got lovely action and hooklinks down to 2lb and upto 6lb

If you can get away with a 13' rod where you fish (I tend to use 15' rods), have a look at the Shimano Catana CX Float (sometimes called Specialist Float). Bought as a blind punt and with stillwater float fishing for decent sized carp in mind, but fish to an ounce or so shy of twelve pounds says it's not bad for Trent barbel.;)

i have the greys tx but in 12 foot, got it for tench fishing but put it to good use surface fishing for carp. had fish to mid doubles and it was great, so i see no reason why the 13 footer wouldn't handle barbel and i know if i have a go for them this is the rod i will be using.

fox duolite specialist float and kevlex extream barbel float rods if you can find them second hand as i think they are both out of production for some time. drennan tench float mk3 was my last heavy float rod but i didn't like the mk4 so no help with my choices. you could try shimano beastmaster 13' carp float, supposed to have a good through action for bigger fish and casting heavy floats and if as good as my 9-11' pellet rod will be up for the job

I have the Shakespeare Mach3 XT Power Match,13 1/2 foot and confidently use it on stillwaters and the river.Lovely action when playing fish.I did a fair bit of research before buying and chose it over the Drennan Tench Float with no regrets.

I use the TF Gear TSI 15ft. You'll need to spend a little more but quite simply its amazing. Super soft tip for silvers and loads of reserve for big fish. Light and balanced. It'll take upto 12-15 lb line I think, just to give you an idea of what it can do.

Sorry Justin I must have been a bit brain dead , was in local tackle shop couple of weeks ago and Drennan rep was in with some new rods one of which was a 15 foot specialist float rod so if you aint decided on one yet take a look , cant remember how much he said they were , also the series avon/specialists that were available in 1.25 and 1.5 tc is having a 1.75 tc added to the series

Drennan tench float rod, excellent rods for that sort of fishing...and that sort of money.

Cheers, Dave.

Agree with Dave the Drennan Tench Float rod is capable of withstanding some serious abuse when you need to really pile on the pressure.....a real cork creaker. If you can find an old Normark specialist 12' 9" float rod that will also fit the bill,

Richard
