Fleece Recommendations

Senior Member
Im after a decent fleece for wearing under my lightweight but wind/rain proof jacket that I wear for most of the time but need some extra warmth now the night are getting colder ...

Ive had a couple of cheaper ones but they were just not warm enough...

Dont want to spend a fortune but accept that you get what you pay for so anyone any recommendations...

cheers

Hi Patrick,

I spend my working days in a bakery, so hate being cold on the banks when I fish through the winter :)

Also have been a hill walker for years, had so many fleece jackets.

For winter fishing I wear an army softie jacket under a gortex jacket + thermal vest, really warm, recommended.

Around £25/30 for a new one off ebay.

Works for me :)

Take a serious look at the army puffa/pack away jackets

I have 1 , I can choose between green or desert sand colour haha

A search on eBay will show prices from 25-70 they are seriously warm , better than any fleece in my view and they pack down to nothing

Patrick,i wore one of these all last winter under a Goretex shell,

Rab Men's Boulder Pull-On Fleece - Outdoorkit

Very warm, and VERY breathable but they have very little wind resistance so they need to be worn under a jacket. I also have a RAB down gilet to top up but it rarely got used.

Other more bulky option is the Buffalo spec 6 shirt, its a different animal and is water RESISTANT and totally windproof in its own right, but, bulky under a jacket.

ESP used to make a great fleece that was 'laminated' to provide a certain amount of water-resistance. It was probably one of the only items of clothing I have bought from a tackle manufacturer that actually performed.

Patrick,

If you have a Decathlon store close by give it a visit, you can get some very sensibly priced fleeces which if you layer you will keep well warm. I have a thin fleece which I wear next to the skin, layer that with a thicker one on top and finish with your top coat and bodily you'll be toast....my problem is keeping my legs warm!!!...

If you're wearing it under something else have a look at these:

Ex Police Black Polartec Shower & Windproof Fleece Jacket S * M *L * XL ** | eBay

They are genuine Malden Mills Polartec (the best fleece IMO) and at this price an absolute snip. I bought one and never regretted it.

Thanks Anthony, just ordered one, hoping bob, or anyone else, can recommend something for over the top when it *isses down. :) Preferbly the type that doesn,t rustle, so can also wear it for golf, cheers fellas.

Is rustling a major problem on your golf course Derek? I didn't know there were cowboys in golf as well :D

Cheers, Dave.

Here is the Gen. 2 version you have Bob. I must say that they certainly sound very good....but I can see no difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 in the specs?

Helikon ECWCS Jacket Generation II Olive

Incidentally, I can see no mention of the membrane being Goretex, so I assume it is something else?

Cheers, Dave.

Fancy Dress

The river banks are going to be full of would be coppers and soldiers, do we have anything from the Ambulance Service or Coast Guard ?:p

Dave/Rhys - the Generation 2 has more pockets but otherwise very similar to Generation 1.
Goretex - not in name but a similar product. Even looks like Goretex.
I like the extra wear patches on their garments, especially the ECWCS and Fleece. Have some of their trousers as well all very good kit at reasonable prices and refreshingly other colours rather than just camo - although you can get that in their range as well.
Cheers
Bob
