Fishing in Cuba

Steve Reed

Senior Member
I am at the early stages of planning a family holiday to Cuba. Forced myself to watch Nobson Green last night and would dearly like to incorporate a day or two of fishing for tarpon or bonefish. I have no idea where to start planning. If anyone can point me in the right direction and give me an idea of the cost of a day with a guide including tackle it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

I've not been to Cuba, but I imagine that it might be quite expensive to organise from the UK. If money is no object there are no shortage of links if you google 'Tarpon fishing in Cuba' or whatever.
I have always found that it is much more cost effective if you research the best places / seasons etc on the web and then just turn up and look for a boat and guide.

I once spent a weekend in Guantanamo Bay, not as an inmate, but as a guest. Cuba to me is still one of my top destinations to go back to. If you dont enjoy the fishing, the Cuban way of life will blow you away.

Hi Steve, (Where are you going ???)
These links may help,
I have been to Cuba twice and not caught a lot - it seems to me that you need to spend a small fortune to catch fish in Cuba - make sure where your going you can fish from the beach and rocks for free - cayo guillermo pier was free last year saw plenty of very big fish but my fly rod was very under gunned so take big lures !!!

Steve - pm me as to where you are going and I may be able to help. I have done three trips out there and my uncle runs trips out there.

Yes Steve speak to Baxy Boy, he will put you right!!

I have been to Cuba, it is the dogs bol...................................really good!!:)

Be careful who you go out with as there are an awful lot of people in Cuba who do NOT know what they are doing, just be a bit selective and you will have a great time!

Holiday booked - tackle being assembled, getting excited! I am planning on taking a 3 piece fly rod and a travel spinning rod. What is the most cost effective and secure way of getting them safely to my destination? I have loads of plastic rod tubes cluttering up the garage. Will the rods survive air transport in a plastic tube?

Looking at the excellent advice and help Steve has had on his Cuba visit, and also the help I have recieved on my Spanish plans. It says

Well Done the BFW brotherhood.

Have a great trip Steve.

Thanks Graham. Flyfishing for bonefish in the Caribbean will make a pleasant change from sitting on the frozen banks of the Lodden!

Iv'e taken mine to Spain quite a few times in a rod tube.Never any probs. If you could get 2 rods in one tube they wont move about too much and if there is space you could put some bubble wrap round them. If your travel spinning rod is not too long try to fit it in your case. tite lines

I'm now booked to go myself, flying out on Easter Sunday! I always take travel rods when I go abroad so they, and my reels, fit in the suitcases much to my wife's dismay as it reduces the shoe space! :D

Looking out for some heavier tackle now as I doubt that the light outfits that I use for redfish and snook in Florida will be up to the task in Cuba!

Steve

I will be back by Easter Sunday so will post a catch report. I am hoping do a day after bonefish and a day tarpon fishing. Musn't forget the other half - the holiday is to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary so it won't be a non-stop fishing fest!
