Fishing Gurus on Sky T.V.

Hi Adrian

I don't have a degree in performing arts and the only drama I have is with the wife when I say I am going fishing.
I don't have an agent either?:eek::):):)

I was contacted and asked if I would go on the program by Keith Arthur, to be honest I did think long and hard before I said yes, I did it on the basis that I will try anything once and I must say I found the whole thing a very interesting experience, particularly as I feel I have a face more fit for radio.;)

When I am asked to fish on telly, upmost in my mind is the fact that I must represent anglers in the best way I can, far too many people consider angling to involve a fishing rod with a worm on one end and a fool on the other and I get annoyed that angling is so badly represented by the media in general (Robson Green is a prime example).

I did not see the episode mentioned in this thread, so I cannot really comment but be assured, IF they did come across representing angling or anglers poorly, they WILL get vilified on a variety of levels and probably regret their actions already.

The one thing that I did not expect from my brief TV appearances was the extremely unpleasant: - text messages, phone calls and private messages that I have received, not a particular problem for me, my shoulders are broad and in the main I ignore it all, most come from un-named sources, but some do supply a name and those I will deal with in person when the opportunity arises.
Most of this comes from people that are keyboard warriors, not keen on personal interaction, whereas I have always enjoyed the cut and thrust of face to face discussion.

The point I am making really is that, If you get approached by the media, be prepared for a fair bit of un-pleasantness and if you are a little sensitive by nature, the cost is likely to very much out-weigh the value!

Hi Keith,
If you read my post again in context you will realise I was being ironic with my original post. As for your unpleasant knockers take comfort in these words of Edgar Allan Poe,

"To vilify a great man is the readiest way in which a little man can himself attain greatness".

The purpose of my original thread was to highlight what I consider to be bad angling practice – unfortunately, some of the replies tended to drift away from my original point. I can only assume that the programme’s producer and presenters misguidedly thought that showing rods almost being pulled in to the river would somehow ‘sensationalize’ the thrill of fishing for such powerful fish. My criticism was constructive and at no time did I intend to be nasty to Dean or Steve who are both fanatical and experienced anglers.

I suspect that Keith Speer and I are of similar age and also have a similar angling background. Being of a certain age, good manners were instilled in us at a very early age and so too was the love of angling. I was therefore sorry to hear that he found himself on the receiving end of boorish comments from people he aptly refers to as ‘keyboard warriors’.

Angling forums are a great way for fishermen to communicate with each other. They provide an excellent medium for fishermen to chat, give advice and discuss matters relating to our great sport. At the end of the day though, there is nothing better than sitting on a riverbank somewhere or in a pub, talking fishing – face to face!

Keith, i dont think anything was aimed at yourself mate,
in fact i think you along with mike are great ambassadors for fishing with your ability to define what your telling us in plain unadorned language that concentrates on the subject along with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure, putting it basically a very interesting and informing session and i have never found an uninteresting or boring time listening to you or mike and now i am talking about live chats in person, both yourself and his honour;)
have my genuine respect and i am very glad i know you a bit mate:)

I did a radio and a tv program a very long time ago with the late Norman Worth and to be honest i think any actor however bad they where could have done a better job than me :0 When i have put the tape on for the grandkids it gives them a good laugh and a lot of embarassment for me. Mind you i did have a fringe / long hair and a magnum moustache.Haven't seen any of you Keith but i admire anyone that can get in front of a camera and try to catch fish to order when their not used to it.

Gosh John I am quite touched mate!

Very nearly enough to buy you a pint when next we meet………....well very nearly:eek:

I know none of this was aimed at me, I was just making the point that the anglers involved have probably already been made aware of their shortcomings, I shall be meeting up with some of the Sky bods this weekend, I shall mention this thread and the various criticisms, they don't mind a bit of feedback and to be fair some important points have been made.
