Fish Stocking at Penton Hook

Love the TAC work and does sound great, but the question must be asked as to why it needs re-stocking, when it is a “great habitat for young barbel, dace and chub”!

Is there a problem with the river in that area and are they not breeding naturally? Re-stocking seems to be happening continuously in UK rivers just to 'maintain' that the species are still present and are not seen to be dying out or non-existent!...especially when the EA carry out river surveys each year and generally re-stocked fish (if they survive) will create positive data for the EA, but really falsify the true bigger picture.

that was one of my favourite places at one time, i thought they created a nursery area at one time? at penton hook, only real downside is the tremendous boat numbers passing through here.

I visited Penton Hook last year and was impressed by the excellent work that TAC had done. A great bunch of lads.

Indeed chaps, the TAC lads do a fantastic job and have built some solid relationships with other stakeholders on the river.

RW - the natural recruitment on the Thames appears ok, I use the word 'appears' as that is my view in the absence of any compelling set of data. There are indeed smaller fish coming through, although, I guess, a stocking is never an unwelcome thing.
I should have stated, I'm talking about the middle/lower reaches here. I know it's a different story above Oxford..

Hi Ian..I remember fishing Penton Hook back in the late 80's when we were doing research into the health of barbel linked with water quality on different rivers. My mate caught a couple of barbel from below the weir back then and lets say they didn't seem to be in that good condition and were not the normal colouring as one would expect. Full marks to the TAC though and i support them all the way in what they are doing, as i always have.

Hi Ray, the Thames fish the WBC lads caught this year, all through the middle to lower reaches we're in the main, in good condition. In fact a handful were absolutely mint. Really great to see. There is also a good spread of year classes which is a good sign for the future.

I'm sure the guys who lead the TAC cause welcome your support Ray. A smart group of chaps.

Ian
