hi had all my tackle nicked all those years ago, just recently got back into fishing, bought some cheaper range tackle,me and my mate were on the upper trent one night when we hit the barbel, i caught five, up to about four and a half pounds, but thoroughly enjoyed it, i wanted that buzz again,i got it today on middle trent, a personal best of 7lb 8oz,a lovely hard fighting fish, its given me the bug i want more,,got the rod back in then a gang of youths on opposite bank started attacking us with fireworks,it was a bit dangerous, they were trying to hit us with them, they moved on but i reckon they spooked our holes up,bloody idiots, but they couldnt take the smile off my face with a pb barbel.

Congratulations mate, i packed up fishing for a few years 20 years ago and by the time i got back a lot had changed but barbel still went like trains and they look fantastic

Well done mate. I started again after a 15 year break 4 years ago and, although i enjoyed catching carp from puddles, it wasn't until i caught a winter barbel from the Trent that my obsession really got underway again.

Good luck with your barbelling future :)

Nice one T, you deserve it pal, I was right happy when you told me you'd got one mate there's nowt finer, and I'm sure that will be one of many to come mate.
Congratulations!!!!!

I bet it's nice to be back.

Whilst the Trent has its attractions don't overlook the river on your doorstep;- the Don. Plenty of middling barbel in the Sheffield reaches and bigger ones out at Donny.

thanks for the comments guys, im well chuffed with todays events, and clive i would dearly love to catch a barbel from the sheffield don,, would there be any chance of any information coming my way (pretty please). of course i would keep it close to my heart.

Iv been on a stretch of the Don today on the cliffe first time I hav'nt fished the stretch for 5 year or so and was astounded at how much it had changed looks like it should be riddled with barbel but nothing other than grayling and trout I walked the river looking for deep holes, snags, gravel bars, etc with no joy but I think if I go abit further up the river above the weir il pick one or two up as its a lot deeper and quite a few overhangs.
Cheers.

I'm afraid my days of giving information out on here are over. Too many people want to be put onto the best pegs without being prepared to do any of the research for themselves. You tell them in confidence where the best spots are and next thing they are broadcasting them all over their blogs.

Anyway, finding new fishing spots is part of the fun of fishing and I wouldn't want to spoil that for you. All you need is Google Earth and a bit of time. There are barbel in the whole of the Don below Oughtibridge and probably a little upstream of there too. Lots of the river is easily accessible, other parts less so, but it's all free. Use the basics that you will find in the forum pages regards depth, flow and type of bottom, and bear in mind that they are wild fish and not used to queuing up behind a feeder, and you'll catch them.

I have ;)

yes clive ive had a look at a few places on the don, most look too shallow to fish without using stalking type tactics,i obviously havent fell on the right peg yet but as soon as i get more time ill have a propper look,im not looking for an easy ride, but dont get a lot of time for research,,cheers tony

But it's stalking type tactics that you need for the upper Don. You might be able to set up your Bivvy at Sprotborough, but in the Sheffield area, it's very much softly-softly.

If much of the river is too shallow then you only need to concentrate on the other areas. Take a short rod, float and plummet and spend an hour or so finding the deep holes. Then go back with your light ledger rod and some Spam.

Had my first barbel off the don at stocksbridge 20 years ago I have have also caught them under the bridge at meadowhall , the don has some real surprises including some big carp

You are quite right Robert. There are 'surprises' that the Salmon & Trout Association would rather you didn't know about ;)

Agree with you there Clive, as you probably read my earlier post I fished the son yesterday it looked right until I casted out, I knew straight away from felling the weight down I was waisting my time so I roved the river and in the stretch I roved I couldn't find a place what made me think barbel are there, and river fishing imo is about finding features (deep holes, snags, overhangs, good natural food source, oxigenated water etc, there's also other local rivers which shouldn't be neglected aswel mate ;)
