Feeder rod reel

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a reel to put onto my quivertip rod, currently a Drennan series 7 1.5lb quiver rod or Free Spirit 1.5lb Tamer. I have a couple of Shimano 4000OC’s, and a couple SS1600 which are on my barbel rods. Can you recommend a reel for feeder work up to £100 please.

Thanks.

For my Chub and Perch quiver tip work on 11ft feeder rods, I use these:

Although if you are primarily targeting Barbel with the rods, you may be better sticking with 4000 sized reels.

Thanks Neil, I actually had one of these and wasn’t a fan of the double handle. I was considering another OC, but there is so much choice out there I thought I’d ask in here. I was looking at Ninja reels as I don’t particularly need a bait runner.

If you're not fussed about a baitrunner the Shimano Aero XR 5000 is nice. Sometimes on offer for about a £100, I paid £95 a while back. Its much lighter than the OCs. The ninjas are decent but personally I like the XR a lot more.

I saw the Aero XR but couldn’t find many reviews. I’d like to think as a Shimano reel its got the quality aspect, I’ll have a closer look at them.

Hi Wayne,
I realise you’ve got your current reel/rod set ups but I’ll swap a Shimano Aero 4000 Feeder FA for an OC 4000. Like new, two spools, boxed etc if that’s of interest?

The weight difference between the 5000 and 4000 xr is really negligible as well, so in my mind there was no reason not to get the slighter bigger one. The 5000 is much smaller than shimano 5000 reels of old, more like 4000 size but with a nice wide spool.

The Shimano XR’s are great reels. I have 2x 5000 size. I use them for float work.

However for a feeder set up I would use a Shimano 4000 Gt-Rd. Primarily because it has a fighting drag which makes it super versatile. I’ve used various similar Shimano fighting drag reels since about 1990 for all my lead/feeder fishing on both stillwaters and rivers.

What does a fighting drag offer that a standard front grab doesn't? I've always seen them but never used one before.
