Just a minute Dave, can I correct you on something. We northern guys do not dump in the river, most unhygienic, not to mention the danger of nut nibbling rodents.
We are big strong lads, if you had visited the last Ouse challenge match you would have see all the guys brought along their own portaloo. Some even had inflatable bidets.

I do agree with people saying it depends on the bait and conditions, while on the hook subject are we still allowed to use barbed hooks on all rivers as not been river fishing for a while ?

This thread has become much more interesting than the usual "what size hook" question. It's given me some great info on what works on other rivers than i fish on. Hopefully, i won't be hitting your rivers blind next summer on my holidays.

I have no favourite hook but i have favourite makes of hooks or style. The last 2 years ive fished with 4 and 6 but this year on the same runs
Large hook ain't working so am down to size 10 with smaller baits and am catching again. The best thing for the OP is to do a reccy and ask anglers on the bank what is working in the area including baits etc.

Depends on the bait I'm using, and the river I'm fishing. On the Teme where it's hook 'n hold I use Fox Arma SSBP (8-10), but on the Severn I usually use Drennan Super Specialist (8-10) for smallish baits, and Drennan Boilie Hooks (2-4) for biggish-big meat. I've not used a barbed hook since 2004.

I was always worried, that by using a barbless hook i would lose fish, so always used barbed as a confidence thing. ( fish of a lifetime and all that ), but after an occasion when fishing as a guest one time on the Wye, and getting broken, a bailiff i was fishing with gave me a barbless hook hooklength, to save me retying a new barbed one. I didn't lose a fish all day, and i did actually catch a few. I have in the past, had a bit of a hook fetish :D, but once my supply of barbed eventually runs out, i think i'll stick with barbless, so much easier to remove. :)

Fav size depends on hookbait/river/conditions, but will normally start with a 10 or 12 with a hali pellet. :)
