Falling water temperatures

I am thinking of fishing on the Severn next week, but the weather forecast tonight has made me have second thoughts.

With the oncoming colder weather I got to wondering what effect this will have on water temperatures?

Clearly the water temperatures are going to drop.......but how quickly does the colder weather have an effect on the water temperature? Is it hours, days, weeks? I have no idea on the timeframe.

Would seasoned anglers now wait until the temperatures settle down or get out fishing before the temps start to drop too much?

Thanks

Michael

I only live 15 minutes from the severn and we havent had any sharp frosts as of yet. Night time temperature is starting to drop but nothing major. Only thing that could alter water temperature is the release of dam water from wales. What part of the river severn were you thinking of???

Dave i was on the severn sat night and the temps went down to 1.5 oc mates still caught i blank in style lol

Steves right, I was fishing. still had one though :) although my Leeda reinforced Korum finally gave up the ghost :(

Yer I was referring to hard frosts Dean, but obviously I dont live as close as some on here.
May be worth getting an update on weather conditions off these guys Michael before you make the journey?? Ive been fishing the lower severn for the last five or six years and am out of touch with the middle reaches. However a conversation with a friend of mine who bailiffs the KDAA section at Bewdley revealed the barbel are still showing in decent numbers.

I think the autumn drop in temps lets the fish know winter is on the way and therefore encourages them to have a last feed up before winter arrives, the same thing happens with carp on still waters, and indeed most species. Autumn has to be my favorite time of the year!

I'm expecting to be out on the Severn on Thursday and Friday evenings (and maybe again over the weekend), so we'll see what effect the cold weather has. I blanked on friday:(, but just about everyone else (except Deano;)) caught well, despite the clear skies, bright moon and plunging air temperatures.

Yes Andy even even the best of us have blanks. lol

I eventually decided to give it a go today and ended up at Knowle Sands, wow what a windy day.
Whatever the water temperatures I managed 5 barbs to 6lb all on boilies, nothing on pellets. I have been trying different baits much more this season rather than sticking to a pellet only approach and it seems to be paying dividends.
Not sure what the water temperature was but it did not seem too cold when I slipped in a got a boot full whilst playing a fish, in fact it was probably warmer in the water than on the bank with the wind chill.
