Fairweather angler?

I went out on Saturday. I took two lads that had never fished for this species before...
We ended the morning with 6 fish, caught on a variety of methods.

It was a great mornings fishing, and the lads hopefully went away with some useful knowledge about how to set up, catch, handle and release this wonderfull species.

What were we fishing for..... PIKE!!!!!!!!!

I cant for the life of me, understand why anglers sit out in all kinds of atrocious weather hoping for the slim chance of a Barbel, when Roach, Grayling, Chub, Pike, Dace, Perch, Zander are probably feeding away, and a change of tactics would probably see regular sport......

Bonkers.

Peter Littleworth's got it right..... go fish for something else.

The excitement of seeing a Pike float twitch and slide away is one of 'THE' sights every angler should experience.
Go take a couple of pints of maggots down to your local river and try for the Roach.
They dont have to be big to be beautiful.
20 4-8oz Roach is a cracking days sport, especially if you've had them on the stick from a nearside glide.

Variety is the spice of life.

Agree with all of that, apart fom those pesky Pike:eek:

There do seem to be rather a large number of out and out barbel anglers where nothing else will do, that is not meant to be a criticism at all, I guess however what do you replace a two foot twitch and a fight to the death with? Well for me that's easy, big roach, about as rare as hens teeth, and as beautiful as a super model, they really are the ultimate challenge.

Funny that this thread should appear just now.... since my last abortive attempt at catching a Barbel, I have been thinking long and hard about why I sit in the cold for hours catching very little..... I am not a fair weather angler as those who know me will say..........but sitting freezing your almonds off is less appealing than it was 10 years ago in some ways ... more about that later ......I seem to concentrate on one species for a few years then move on..... I have done the Tench thing, the Pike thing, the Bream thing, interspersed with Chub and Roach, but thinking about it, the one consistent species I have not bothered about, is Carp possibly because it seems that fishing in ponds, no matter how big, for stocked fish, no matter how big, just does not appeal.....and thinking further .... the one branch of our sport / pastime that I have never deserted, nor will, is sea angling..... I just love Boat Angling, and Bassing , and for more years than I can remember, certainly at least 40 years, I have made religious trips to the coast every winter ,and sat or stood in the most atrocious conditions with sleet and snow howling around my ears and ice forming in the rod rings, in search of Cod, and I am off tomorrow to do just that on the Holderness coast..first trip of the season, so much for fair weather angling..... its just the motivation to chase Barbel that seems a bit sparse at the moment..... I am sure it will return though, I just love the power of a Barbel...

As Steve says...variety is the spice of life.

But it is... I really feel guilty if I don't go, and then when I go, I feel guilty:(

Going fishing when half in the mood seldom leads to a proper effort being made, at least in my experience. I know what you mean though Neil, conditions are great, it may be your only chance of the week but for some reason you just don't fancy it. But you know you should be on the bank! That pb may just be there today and if you don't go you sit there looking outside and wondering if you had just made the effort....
