EA licence

you don't need it to fish,
If you have bought a full licence for this season from the Post Office, by phone or on line on the Post Office website, you are covered to go fishing immediately. You will receive a till receipt (from Post Office branches) or confirmation email from the Post Office (for online or telephone purchases) to confirm that your purchase has been successfully processed.

As Dave said, you are OK. If I remember right, you should have been supplied with a reference number, and that entitles you to fish until your licence arrives. Even if you don't have that, and are asked for your licence while you are fishing, the worst that can happen will be that you will required to produce your licence for inspection when it does arrive, and it will have the date purchased on it, so all will be well.

Cheers, Dave.

Interestingly enough, my licence failed to arrive in the post. I chased up the EA and as long as you have the Reference Number (as per Dave's post above) then it's as good as a licence. If you were asked to produce a licence on the bankside and are unable to, the EA can confirm your validity using one of those Blackcurant phones. Incidentally, the EA send me a replacement. More about this on a separate "Top Tip"post.

How long do they take to arrive by post, paid online last Tuesday and it aint here yet....:(

Steve, it was the post office website that you used i hope, if so, you should have been able to print a receipt out, or written down the relevant order number. It came to light last year, that there were other sites were you could purchase your license from, people were being stung heavily for a handling/admin fee. ( forget how much ), but it did catch a few out.

I must say i'm very impressed with how the EA have streamlined and simplified the arduous task of buying a fishing rod licence  Mine was set up on DD and worked fine until this year for some reason i got no notification slip, so its off to the post office and i am now the proud owner of a printed receipt and a so far 2 week wait for the licence to drop through the door, ok i don't need it apparently, (so why bother printing them at all if the receipt will suffice) and also as i haven't had mine checked for over 20 years what does it matter anyway ? typical beaurocratic farce that makes this great country what it is :D

I agree entirely Simon. When I was young and naive, I convinced myself that I should ignore the apparent insanity of bureaucracy, believing instead that 'THEY' surely possessed a deep, mystical truth hidden from the likes of me, and that everything was actually working smoothly and efficiently for the good of all.

The slow dawning of the awful truth has left me a sadder and more cynical man, but I guess there is a certain delicious sense of dear old British farce involved there somewhere :p

Cheers, Dave.

anyway, you won't get checked i very much doubt, unless your starting the season on the local puddle.

Bought mine on-line on the 31st May and it has just come today:eek: saying that tho my money only went out of my bank on the 6th June. I did know that I was covered to go fishing anyway so I wasnt bothered. As said earlier it wouldnt have mattered because Ive never been asked once:eek:

Got on the phone to the EA turns out the post office issued me a 2011 licence even though the expiry is 31st march and i renewed on the 4th april so i had no licence not sure if it was the post office staff or the computerised till that made the mistake but i have been given a 9 digit number to use until a handwritten license turns up:rolleyes:

I bought one once online and I must have ticked the direct debit option.

I now get a direct debit confirmation in Feb, licence arrives end of Feb and money goes out end of March.

Great as I don't need to remember and I don't have any last minute rushes to get out and get one!

Also as one who is not the greatest fan of the EA, the irritation of paying money to them is removed because I don’t know its happening when it does!

I am not great at remembering things like Licences, Car Tax, Insurance and stuff so for me direct debit works a treat.

I could easily forget and as I am heavily involved in a largish angling club I could not deal with the embarrassment of being tugged without a licence.

The EA keep sending me a salmon licence each year for the price of a coarse licence; not sure why. Have asked them and they dont seem to know why or even care.
