drennan super specialist

never really used them but bought some in 12, 14 and 16 for float fishing pellets with bands...are they any good or am I wasting my time and should get something else?

Great hooks imo and excellent value for money. I prefer straight point hooks, although that probably doesn't matter so much for presenting baits on the float.

its funny the reason I ask is that they just look cheap and sort of old style being just bronze compared to all the fancy Teflon stuff nowadays and to be honest I've used the drennan barbel hooks a lot but they just cost so much

Hi men ,

Swapped over to them for perching on the canal , where I meet the odd carp , they seem to present the bait better , but that might be because of the colour they seem more delicate ?.

Back in the day these were the absolute bench mark for any angler wanting to spend a quid on a packet of hooks for specimen fish. you’d really struggle to straighten them.
I’ve got some in 16,14,12 which I use for my winter chubbing with casters. 6 or 8lb line straight through and that hook even in the smaller sizes is up to the job.
Useless on gravel bottoms unless you can bury the hook as the straight point won’t last 2 casts using a hair.

And that, if you'll excuse the pun, is the point. I imagine most barbel anglers encounter gravelly/rocky riverbed from time to time? I found the super specialist blunt far too easily.
