Drennan super specialist twist lock L N pole

Has anyone on here got or used one of these? I went to buy one today, I was just about to pay an I notices a crack about 8in long down the pole with no signs of an impact just a hair line crack. I'm just curious if it was a one off or if it may be a fault on the twist lock inside the pole?

I just bought one a week ago there's a thread on here about the handle it's very popular just don't over tighten it or it's neither use nor ornament. Great handle think you might have copped for a bad one pal.

Iv just found that thread about the locking ov the pole it's put me of a bit but it's exactly what I was after, if anyone knows a similar pole I'd be very gratefully for suggestions!!!

I heard the rumours about issues with the twistlok, but having had one for a season, i've found it to be brilliant up to now.

Had all sorts of problems with the Drennan - they replaced it when it first cracked - I have since epoxy glued and gaffered taped it - should have took my own advice and got the Gardner!

The thing what put me off the Gardner handle was the weight and size of the locking system.

I have given up on the Drennan, the Gardner pole may be a tad heavy, but its bullet proof, a great bit of kit that wont pack up on you in the middle of the night miles from anywhere (yes I have issues with mine! :)).

I love Drennan's stuff and have three rods etc, but for the money, the issues with the landing net pole should have been solved by now without the fixes that anglers have had to use ref the past thread.

I have both the Drennan and the Gardner. I have had the mech on the Drennan let go on me but that was entirely down to me being cack handed. I can't deny a strange desire to get things just that little bit tighter. With the Drennan, that's really not a good thing. Since getting the replacement grommet and being made aware of the consequences of over tightening, I've had no problems at all.

Having both to go at, it's invariably the Drennan that I take with me unless I take both or I know I'll be fishing a swim with a long drop to the water.
The Gardner is good, it's light and strong. However, I prefer the narrower diameter of the Drennan.

I've had the Drennan for a couple of seasons. I've had to do a little maintenance and also replaced the grommet (posted by Drennan the same day) — but I wouldn't swap for anything, it's one of my favourite bits of kit. It just feels right.

Another tick for the Gardner from me.

Smashing bit of un-breakable kit. Gives you forearms like Popeye aswell.

landing net poles

another vote for the gardner from me. use it for all my carp and barbel fishing. i was put off the drennan after several mates had problems with them

Drennan landing net handle

I appreciate that this has been printed a number of times, but the key is don't overtighten it. The landing net handle only requires the lightest of turns to lock it. I also use a little silicon spray now and again, probably invalidates the warranty etc. but works for me.

Got a drennan and used it a lot over the last 2 seasons. After a few sessions it refused to lock in position but after a strip down and clean with WD40 have not had a problem. Would recommend it to anybody.:)

I don't know...all I know is I need an extending handle, the vote seems to be split, between the solid but bulky Gardner and the sleek but flimsy Drennan :) I do have an c.1960's alloy extending that was passed on to me by my late Uncle Doug, I have used it to land Barbel on the Wye from a 'suicide' swim but it is as heavy as hell and certainly not 'vogue' gear:) but it does have a knurled brass knob the tightens the thing up well enough, not like your 'hairy fairy' nylon grommet thingy

Any sensible offers will be considered:p.

Neil can I suggest you pop in to Bankside tackle they are just up the road from you .... I am sure if you ask them nicely they will let you have a play with the Drennan handle ....
As long as you dont over tighten the twist lock you wont have a problem .
A 1/4 turn is all that is needed to lock it
