This is the way I see it but correct me if I’m wrong

The Mk 1 - 12ft 9†Line size 3lbs - 6lbs (Made in UK)

The Mk 2 - Is the Super version 12ft 9†- Line size 2 1/2lbs - 8lbs (Made in UK)

The Mk 3 – 12ft 9†– Line Size 2 1/2lbs - 8lbs (Made in China)

The Mk 4 – 13ft – Line size 2 1/2lbs - 8lbs with Fuji Reel Fitting (Made in China)

Dave

I have seen a Mk 1 advertised as being 13'. Whether the Mk 1 actually was 13' or just that the guy didn't know, so measured it for the sale and thought 13' was close enough, I have no idea

Cheers, Dave.

Thinking about this, the consensus seems to be that the older versions of this rod are better than the later models, but can a rod made in 1988 still be worth buying? It may have been a better made rod in it's prime...but is it STILL a better rod now?

Even if there is no real visual damage, just superficial cosmetic, everyday wear and tear stuff, there is more to it than that. Surely the action of the blank must have softened right up by now? It surely can't be the rod it once was, after all those years of use?

Can it?

Cheers, Dave.

you can say that about rods made in the 60's, the answer, yes.

Hmmmmm...interesting Dave. I know from my carping that blanks..even on top quality rods, 'loosen up' with use. A 2.75 tc rod is NOT 2.75 tc after even 5 years of constant use?

Mind you, some like them that way :D

Cheers, Dave.

I can understand the attraction of a British made rod. As one of the contributors pointed out, rods do soften. However carp rods get a lot more stick than say a tench rod and probably are more prone to softening. I don't particularly like buying Chinese rods etc., but the manufacturing in the Far East has come on by leaps and bounds and much of their tooling is "state of the art". I do begrudge paying a lot of money for a rod in the UK which costs a few quid to make overseas.

you could always go down the NEW route, you can pick up a new UK chimera float rod for £170.

...I could buy a new house for that :D:D

Seriously though Dave, I have a new plan. I have a 14' Bruce & Walker CTM heavey float rod at home, with which I have landed river carp up to 26.10. It has lain unused in my garage for 15/20 years because it is in need of a refurb, and I could not be naffed to do it myself, nor afford a pro job.

However, I now have someone who is going to do the ring whipping for me, so the job will be done, and I will try it out as soon as. It will cost me a lot less than buying another rod, and if it fails, I have not lost too much.

Cheers, Dave.

Hi Darryl,

No mate, it is a barbel trotting rod that I am after. The problem is lack of finances (forced retirement, on top of life savings being lost ) , hence the possible Ebay route.

Also, it was just an idea, inspired by a certain member on here :D, so it is difficult to justify too much expense for something I may not use too often, if at all...the arthritis in my shoulders may take care of that

Thanks anyway Darryl.

Cheers, Dave.

drennan specialist.

hi everyone
Ive just brought a drennan 11ft 1.25lb rod for £70 off ebay..its a drennan specialist model..just out of curiousity i wondered if anyone on here has come across this rod before..ive brought it for chubbing mainly..would be interested to know how old this model is?..its absulutely mint and had never been used and also has full fugi double legged eyes on it..would be gratefull for any info on this particular model..many thanks and good luck to everyone in the coming season..:)

no its not the super specialist..just the specialist..i suspect its quite an old model as it has rings for securing reel rather than screw reel seat..ive looked on google etc and cant find this particular model anywhere..this rod is in brand new condition not a single mark on it anywhere and no sign of use on the eyes..the chap i brought it off said it had never been used..
