Drennan rod

David Gauntlett

Senior Member
Hi peeps,

Anyone heard of a 'Drennan super tench float rod'? Is it an older/newer version of the ordinary Drennan tench float rod? Or a totally different beast?

Cheers, Dave.

Very versatile float fishing rods and quite sort after. I have two of them, use them for catching Tench,20lb Carp and trotting for Barbel !
As Dave says there are some bargains on Ebay - so go get one !!!
The earlier versions are suppose to be better as they were made in the UK which the “Super is I believe
Regards
Dave

Well damn and stamp my feet:D

The reason I was asking about the Drennan rod was because I was watching the very rod pointed out by David on fleabay. Sadly, I was outbid by some git with more money than I can justify :(

The last one on fleabay went for £61...this time, including the postage, the extremely unpleasant person who won payed over £91 :(

Serves me right for my lack of will power...it was only yesterday I swore never to go on fleabay EVER again :D:D:D

What am I like

Cheers, Dave.

EBay prices are completely unpredictable, keep an eye out for the rod you are after, it'll come up again and it's a matter of luck what it will go for. At least two of your competitors have gone!

No..no..no...pleeeeeease DON'T encourage me. Now I will have to lay down in a dark room, then write out 100 lines saying "I will not risk evilbay any more":D:D:D

I don't know why it is so, but I do know that Ebay, like life in general, runs a whole lot smoother for some folk than it does for others. I can't tell you how many times things have gone wrong for me on Ebay. It is not always guy's trying to rip you off, just things going down the pan (see my Fleabay Flyboy's thread )

But...as I keep on telling myself...thats life

:D

Cheers, Dave.

Just an observation - by mentioning it on here probably gave it more exposure or interest, so could have attracted the odd extra buyer.
Ebay usually runs smoothly and apart from some hooks have had very little problems with stuff purchased in the UK, Europe, Australia and USA.
Quite a high price for the rod - paid around half that - but does seem a sought after item at the moment. A mark1 was around recently for a buy it now at around £80.

Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob,

I did indeed consider that possibility before I posted. On the other hand, though I did search on google for this rod, I could not find it listed by any of the stockists, or any info on it, and there was no way I was going to pay money for a rod I had no knowledge of...kinda between a rock and a hard place :D

Just for future reference Bob, to your knowledge, are all the earlier marks of the Drennan tench float rod considered better/preferable to the latest edition, and is there any one version that is favoured over any other?

I understand that the older marks were British made, and that at least the latest edition is not. Beyond that, and the fact that it is a great barbel trotting rod, I know naff all :D

Cheers, Dave.

the Mk1 tench float is considered the best by many, but it's a old rod now.

Thats what worries me Dave...that rod dates from the late eighties as I recall, and as you say, that is an OLD rod, especiall if it has been used throughout. Makes me wonder if something like the Mk 111 might not be a better bet now.

Cheers, Dave.

mk111 is a top rod as is the mk4, anyone of them would be alright,
and yes the mk4 is built in china but so what, most stuff off the shelf is now anyway.

Just looked back - paid £42 and £53 for Super Tench Float Rods including carriage via ebay. Both were in good condition, one had better cork than the other. One was required as part of a repair/refurbishment job, the other I kept.
New 13' float rods (Tench and Specialist and Tench Float Mark 4) can be bought for between 89 and 130. The Mk1, 2 and 3 were 12' 9" as I recall.

Personally I prefer the Harrison GTI or GTI SU's - but that's me and they are a lot more expensive than the Drennan. The popular lengths are between 12 and 15'.

Cheers
Bob

Some tips. Run a search for Tench Float Rod or whatever and save this search. You will then be emailed at whatever regularity you select when new listings are made.
Use a snipe bidding system to make your bid. This enters your bid in the last few second, you decide, and prevents you getting into silly bidding wars that push prices up...leave that to others. Just bid the maximum you are willing to pay and leave it at that. I use http://biddingscheduler.com which is secure and free.
Read the listing fully in order to ensure you understand what is being sold. Don't bid unless the feedback is near 100% and check what has been said. Make sure that PayPay protection is offered and you pay using PayPal. You shouldn't have any problems and if you do you can get your money back without a problem.
Don't expect bargains...you get a fair price with e bay, what something is worth to the bidders, not bargains.

Thanks Bob,

A very helpful post indeed, great info.

Sadly, with my fairly (strictly :D) limited budget, I must stick to the cheaper end of the good options, otherwise I would investigate your preferred rod.

Cheers, Dave.

Thanks Pete,

You guys really are helping me with all this brilliant info. I did once use one of those snipe systems, but with my brain being what it is, I instantly lost the address and any info on it...couldn't even remember the name of it or the generic term for these systems

There are time when I wonder if I should be allowed out on my own :D

Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that mate...I did wonder if the older ones were preferred because they were better, or just because they were supposedly British made.

Cheers, Dave.
