I've just given up and have managed one session without smoking, traditionally one of my favourite things to do whilst sitting by a river. I'm hoping I'll catch more!

How many of you smoke?

I have been both a smoker and a non smoker.

Simon to be fair it seems to make no difference at all to catching or not!

Mind you it is hard to catch while you are nipping to the shop to get another pack!!:)

I gave up about 12 years ago. Rarely miss it, but...

... it's at that point after setting up, especially if I'm fishing mulitiple rods with bivvy etc (not for barbel!), and I've spend time setting up pods, baiting up, tying rigs, casting, and everything else that goes along with it, then I sit back for the first time and relax ... and that's when I really fancy a smoke! Oh, and also when the fishing is slow and I'm getting restless. Oh, yes, and also immediately after ... no, better not go there;):p

Gave up 5 years ago, I was spending £75 a week on fags, pipe and cigars. Now the tought of putting one in my mouth is yuk! It is not untill you have given up that you realise how much smokers stink like old ash trays, and the worst critic is a reformed smoker.

I have to admit, one of my pet hates is arriving at a swim to find it covered in cigarette butts. They are not biodegradable and they look a fugging mess, take the damn things home

I smoke on a Thursday night when i go for a pint and when I fish which is about once every two weeks, any other time I wouldn't thank you for one.

I have to agree with you there Paul, I am a smoker and just put the ends in a tin along with a lot other peoples that are left in the swim, why it is not considered litter by some other smokers I do not know.

P.S
Congratulations in taking the plunge Simon...it is something I am considering at the moment.

Packed in a couple of years ago, wish I'd done so before though, it's not as tough as some make it out to be.
For me it was a kinda ceremony when I went fishing. Rock-up at appointed swim, bait a couple of swims, tackle up, make myself comfortable, pour a cuppa, bait up and cast in, roll a ciggy, spark-up, sit back and enjoy.
Now that I don't smoke, I tend to move around more and am more focused on the job in hand.
As to catching more, I'm not sure. As a kid I went every week with 2-3 mates. They smoked, I didn't. I always caught more fish.

Well done Simon,

I stopped 4 1/2 years ago as I had to have a stent fitted in a coronary artery, I have not had a single craving since the moment I stopped, after smoking very heavilly since I was 15...................I was about your build then, welcome to the podgy ex-smokers club :)

You mean to say just like me you were a highly trained athlete operating on the borders of olympic standards? ;)

I'm running a half marathon in 6 weeks now, eek, another reason to stop.

(thanks for the VM btw Ian, I know you're not even joking about swims!)

I smoke rollies so they are very much biodegradable.....I gave up for 10 weeks while Mrs T was on a life support unit but within a couple of weeks of getting her home I felt the need for a fag....its her constant bl**din moaning

I read statistically you are likely to live longer if you give up smoking before you are 30 years of age than if you had never smoked before.
I gave up 8 years ago now. Best thing I ever did.

I enjoy a roll up when barbel fishing, but tend to smoke too much on these occasions, however I have found trotting a stick float to be better for your health:)
