Derby railway angling club

Mark Kingston

Senior Member & Supporter
I've decided that I'm going to have to travel this year to get my barbel fix. I'm looking at the said mention club. Most of the water is about 1hr from me. I've done a search on here and most of the posts or threads are a few years old now. Just wondered if there is any current members on here. Just wondered what it was like as a club and what their waters are like.

Many thanks

Mark

I'm not a member Mark, but I do fish on the opposite bank to a Railway stretch but on a different ticket. Can't say I've ever seen anyone fishing that stretch though, but it isn't a very prolific stretch if I'm honest, not for me anyway. But there are fish there to be had.

Looking at some of their Trent waters, reminds more of the days when we match fished the river, and some of their stretches are still used for matches now, Shardlow for example.

I'm sure you will have done, but have you looked at the Pride of Derby ticket ?? Only two sections of the Trent, but some of the Derwent as well. Or Burton Mutual, if or when they open up their membership again.

I've only ever fished the trent at collingham. I'm in northants, most of their waters was about 1hr away and that ticket looked like it had some nice water and with the option of night fishing the trent too. I'll have a look at the other and weigh it all up. Thanks for your reply

I've also thought about joining one of these clubs as I'm also a travelling angler. It looks like Burton Mutual is for local anglers?

BMAA is a decent club, with some decent waters. The rivers are a little neglected IMO, and the club do seem to favour their stillwaters when it comes to doing work on them rather than work parties on the rivers. I find the fishing on the Dove and the upper Trent a little difficult, but I can't put lots of time in on them, so I have to take what's given, I'm afraid.

At the moment the club is doing a review of their membership numbers as there has been rumblings of there being too many members. I can't say the rivers are crowded though. As Tom has said, we should know the results of their findings soon, and hopefully for those waiting to join, there'll be some spaces available.

I won't be letting my ticket go.

I live in Manchester, Nick, and have been a member of BMAA for around seven years. I don't know what the current thinking is, however, as regards anglers from further away. Their facebook page sometimes betrays a minority with a League of Gentlemen attitude, though I don't think those who make the decisions think that way.

It's a great club with some fantastic stretches of the Dove and Upper Trent. If you get a chance grab it with both hands!

I should add, the majority of BMAA anglers seem to be more interested in the stillwaters and, as Simon said, their river stretches are invariably quiet.

Neglected and quiet correct Richard never seen a bailiff in 2 seasons. Done 10 overnighters this season never seen another angler. Club is going down hill for river anglers. all there interested in is the still waters or the match lengths of the trent

That's encouraging, thanks Richard. I live in the south but enjoy fishing in the midlands. I don't fish at night so sleep in my van. I also like real ale!

If it's any consolation Richard, I thought it was a good idea. The only stillwater I ever fish is Staunton and I can have a day ticket for that. Be ideal for me.

Thanks Simon - I had some good feedback on the bank. I'm sure even Roy might've been keen - before the backlash!

Anyone know what Dove Valleys stretches of the Dove are like with a view to trotting for grayling and chub ? Are the banks inaccessible or overgrown ? Thanks.
