Daiwa Powermesh Specialist Avon Wanted

Anthony Cummings

I'm trying to get hold of either the middle section of a Daiwa Powermesh Specialist 1.25 tc Avon rod or a complete rod; anybody out there that can help?

Daiwa Powermesh

Hi Anthony,
Along with the PMXS-2112b, my favourite all round barbel rods summer and winter. Unfortunately, many others are of the same opinion which has kept the price up somewhat. They do come up on e-bay quite regularly but a good one costs £80-100. That would be "as new" or close to it.
Increasingly difficult to find, get 'em now while you still can!

Good luck,
Jeff

I unfortunately snapped the end off my middle section a few years ago:( Had it repaired quite successfully as the break was down near the butt but I'd like to get a new section if possible.

In my opinion this rod is one of the classic rods of all time; the action is superb and I've still to find a rod that can match it........

ive still got an original pms111, better than the pmx imo, only a pound and a quarter test but my god they bend right through the handle.... used it for many years before the fish started getting much bigger, Don't get me wrong, i know thwy will handle very large barbel but i felt it was time to up my t/c a bit just so i felt i was the one in control and not the fish...

3.5tc all the way Kev:)

Pmx's

Hi Baz,

Never!

I recently bought a 1.25 to go with the 1.5 i had as spares, both brand new
You could sell me yours though? £50 each?

Regards,
Jeff

£50 EACH! that would be the day mate, i am hanging on to them like dear life, fantastic rods, but if you feel that you have too many i will give you £50 for yours!:D:D

I have a rather tired Daiwa BS PMXS 2112b (got through about 5 of them) plus lots of sections -Avon tops and 2-3 Quiver tips with silly stickyup ring bit removed.

I rated them as one of the best ever Barbel Rods.

If someone is interested I'll have a count up and tell you what I have. £80 would do it plus postage or collection.

Just had a look.

1 complete rod with both avon and quiver sections
1 Avon top with top ring needing changing as insert missing
3 complete quiver sections with q/tips
3 quiver sections with slight mod to quiver insert and diff quiver inserted/or shortened (ie snapped off!)

Graham

Forgive me, gents, for the ten year bump on an old thread....

I picked up an older Daiwa power mesh yesterday, model pmxs 2112b. Sadly, it’s a bit busted up here and there but well worth sorting out. I’m rather confused though as to what I have though. I see an earlier post on this thread mentions a middle section, yet what I have is a two-piece 12’ rod. Mine has two tip sections, one of which is clearly a heavier Avon tip. The other, lighter tip looks to be snapped off around four inches from the top but this broken section is not a push-in quiver-tip type. So, a couple of questions: was the power mesh a Twin-tip quiver/Avon rod or a twin-tip, say, like a Korum Neoteric, where you get a 1.5 and 1.75 tc tip?
Also, I was wondering if anyone could give me the external dimensions of the smaller butt guide. This one is missing and I want to make sure I order the right one. I’m assuming they’re Fuji -

The original generation 1 powermesh Avon’s are 3 pieces 1 top. You had a very short but section, a long mid section and long tip which kept the overall length of the broken down rod shorter
They did an 11 pms111 and 12 pms112 foot version both in 1.25TC and they were nothing less than excellent. Still imo the best powermesh Avon’s that we’re ever produced with later models not quite matching up.
they made perfect chubbing rods where the chance of a barbel was also on the cards. They also made a great margin fishing rod with a waggler or floater for commercial carp if that was your thing.
a very versatile rod for having good fun with big fish. Not a snag fishing tool but if you have the space there isn’t much that can’t be landed on one.
let down slightly by the dated threaded tip ring. A nice anti frap modification on the tip made it perfect.
all the powermesh Avon’s were good rods but the originals in 3 piece are still the best ones.

It would make a lovely rod with a spliced quiver tip. My Harrison Avon rod was custom built with a long spliced 2 oz tip which suits the blanks through action beautifully.
get the tip Tc right to flow with the action of the rod and you’ll likely make it better than original
What have you got to lose it’s broken anyway 👍🏻

I have an 11' 9" 1.25lb version and have been looking for another to make a pair for ages. My favourite rod ever, brilliant barbel rod, the action soaks up powerful runs and I've also used it to tame double figure carp off the top!

Right. Try again.

Sorry about that. My now deleted post somehow managed to have two copies of each of the photos and I made right pig's ear out of trying to delete them. So now it's the last photo that shows the break.

I'm still none the wiser as to what the original format of this rod was though. was it a twin tip 1.5 and a 1.75 tc ? The butt section doesn't suggest it was a twin tip in any way, only having it marked down as a 1.5tc. Both sections look right for the rod but in different ways but the thinner section doesn't ever look like it was a quiver tip that's broken. Not unless it was an extremely short quiver, the likes of which I've not seen before. I got to admit, I'm baffled.

I had a pair if these always on the go as the earlier pist. Superb rods.

The ones I had were 2 piece. One Avon top and a quiver section that was about 6inches shorter than the Avon.
Quiver tip insert.

Mine were 1 5 tc Barbel Specialist. Graphics as per your photo.

I wonder if the quiver section of yours has been converted or another broken top section added and top ring added

I was waiting and hoping for you to turn up Graham. When I saw that you’d had a few of them I figured you’d be the man to know. So a 6” quiver tip insert then? That’s short by usual standard and probably means I’ve only lost about an inch in front of the last guide on that section.
so I reckon I’ll be buying a few larger quiver tips and cutting the quiver section back to the next guide and then cutting the new quivers accordingly. Seems I got lucky this weekend getting this and two other rods for an absolute steal.

thanks for replying chaps.

They were the rods that many of the Windsor guys used as well.
You may find some of the John Wilson type quivers would do the trick non carbon.
The original quiver tips had a stupid mini ring fitted on the top so an isotope plastic holder could be fitter over it.
Bloody nuisance and removed.
