Dacron alternative

Neil Blood

Senior Member
Now that Dacron hooklink is no longer available (Drennan were the last to produce it?). Can anyone recommend a similar alternative with the same properties. If you’ve ever used Dacron, you’ll know what I mean.

Oh and if anyone has any spools of the Drennan Dacron in 15lb lying around, I’ll take it if your hands 😁

You’ve stirred up some memories there Neil. Way back in the 70’s and 80’s I used to use Black Spider Dacron, remember that one? I caught some very good Carp using that as hooklink.

Black Spider, now that is a blast from the past Bill.Used it in the 70',got it from Terry Eustace (I think),can still remember where is was I first tried it !!.

Plenty of dacron fly line backing in 20lb about but some crazy colours. If you are using in on big chunks of meat in floodwater the colour should not matter and white could possibly dye to what you want

So what properties might Dacron have that other braids don't, or not to the same degree @Neil Blood ??
(I thought I had some of it somewhere [yellow spool?] but can't find it atm. I never really liked it, preferring Kryston Super Nova).

When fishing 'BIG' meat hook baits with the hook buried inside, it doesn't cut through the meat. Also you know when you use something in your fishing and just really get on with it, this is Dacron for me. I have considered trying some of the older established Kryston hooklinks, as an alternative e.g. Merlin, since Drennan stopped selling their Carp Dacron, a couple of years back.

I've probably got enough of the Drennan Carp Dacron in 15lb BS, to last the remainder of this season and next?

Dacron was / is popular for use on multipliers sea fishing. Might find some in a sea fishing specialist shop.
Permanent marker can colour it how you want.

How strange ...presumably it's thicker than other braids then? Weird one. Whenever I've had that problem (which is very rare, as I usually use Tulip Bacon Grill, which is tough) I use an easily detachable hooklink with a teardrop at the other end from the hook. I then thread the meat onto the hooklink by pulling the teardrop through the meat with a small hooked baiting needle. It only takes seconds to do.

Go on Neil you know you want to (fish a 20lb bright dayglo dacron hooklength) imagine the looks you will get 😀😀😀 s-l400.jpgdacron.jpg

Make everything bright yellow or orange including the mainline it might avoid liners. I am sure fish spook when they touch the line without seeing it. Plaice home in on bait due to bright beads why not coarse fish.

....and most of us must have seen the video of barbel's panic reaction to accidentally brushing against unseen fluorocarbon line.

I was given a sample of korum braid a few years back that was similar to dacron. No idea what it's called as it was literally just a cut off.

Many moons ago (15 years) when the choice of braid was more limited a certain moderator of this site did a comparison between grey fireline and bright yellow fireline in 'real' fishing situations. after quite a time he concluded that there was little or no difference in his catch rate.
I have watched fish swim around black spider dacron.

I’ve found some 10lb Drennan Carp Dacron in a drawer in the den, I’ll stick it the post, if you want it. Just ping me your address in a DM.
