I believe most are M12 x 1.75 standard metric threads and it may be a case of just running a tap down it to recut any damage out of the threads but this depends on the severity of the damage and how far you took it when you crossed them.
the soundest repair But unfortunately the most expensive is to fit an m12 metric helicoil. This would obviously give you a nice hard steel thread too.
put up some pictures and if you can take any dimensions all the better.

found this on ebay £15.99 is this the kit Richard

That’s a cheap one and while it might do the job they ain’t the best to work with.
it would probably do for what I believe you have is an aluminum thread.
however Gary if I was you I’d do your best to measure your thread first and confirm it’s m12. I think it would be but I could be wrong

And of course we are assuming here the male thread on the pole itself isn’t damaged?
if it is you’ll need a Die.
pictures would help a lot.

Hi men ,

That kit will do the job .

They ain’t the easiest to work with Mark. I’ve used cheap diy helicoil kits many times and It can go south very quickly
Difficult to get thread started. Thread jumps a tooth, handles break mid application and I’ve had the tag end not break off clean resulting in the punch getting jammed.
once they are in even if you’ve ballsed it up they are a nightmare to get back out.
just speaking from experience.
if it’s just a damaged Female thread not allowing for the male to get started I’d be inclined to try tapping it back out first or spend some money on a better quality helicoil kit.

Re tapped the brolly did not work properly to stripped at the beginning. Have ordered the kit to try and fix the problem. Thanks for the advice

Hi men,

I helicoil stuff almost every day 🙂 , and without doubt the better gear you buy , the better quality to use . But if it's just a brolly , and you don't know a friendly engineer then needs must 😉.

I would say , make sure you hold the spigot firm .

I once cross-threaded a sump plug on my mark II Astra GTE (shocking car). I stuck some PTFE tape around the thread and wound it back in. I then stuck a load of plastic padding around the plug. I then sold the car.... ;-)

Success fitted this morning and working. The pole supplied with the brolly shelter was of a bigger thread for the kit found a suitable umbrella threaded pole in garage and works great. Pole is a heavy one will be cutting it down to save on weight.
Thanks for you help and suggestion hopefully no more struggling to put shelter up in bad weather
