What are the Torrix like for barbel Rich? They wouldn't be my preferred carp rod of choice (prefer more parabolic eg. Acurix) but have been looking at a poss 'decent' set of barbel rods for next season . . .need to 'bend' but have a backbone for 4-5oz+ feeders as well as decent fish playing ability. Don't want 2.75 beasts . . .want an allrounder (can't be arsed to carry small water and floods) so 2lb tc is usually the best of both for me . . .Hi-S are are silly money - are Torrix the way forward?
They are an acquired taste Chris. Not for everyone I can tell you that.
I fell in love with them straight away because I christened them with powerful doubles and that’s what they really need to really benefit from them. They are not a complete through action rod but they are not a tip action rod either. More a 2/3rds tip and a very powerful last 500mm above the cork. It does bend right through to the cork but your stopping a powerful fish if you get it to so.
I think if I was fishing a river catching a lot more but smaller fish I probably wouldn’t enjoy them anywhere near as much. I’d probably want something like a chimera or a GTI where the blank power is more throughout. The torrix is really steely in the back. You need a big angry fish and the whole blank just comes alive. Best big fish barbel rod I’ve ever used by a mile.
That said, I don’t like the 12 footers much. I know a lot of people do but they are a totally different feeling rod. I find the extra foot makes em feel less balanced but that’s my own conclusion of them.
I have a pair of 11 foot 1.75 torrix’s and I’ve used the 11 foot 2lb torrix as well. It is also amazing in its own right and would definitely put 4oz out no problem.
I have a pair of 2.25 seekers for my heavy stuff and 2.75 basias if things get really silly.

Good review - interesting! Torrix also have split opinion in the carp world but like all things you need to try them!

Wish more tackle shops / rod builders would do a 'try before you buy' scheme . . .deposit down, abuse the rods, accept or reject. Would make life a lot easier (and cheaper) . . .! Cotswold Rods used to do this (they had a lake nearby) but its always about casting, not what the rod can do with an angry specimen on the other end . . .which is more important for all species IMO

Based on your description of what I think you want I would avoid a Torrix. An all rounder that is capable of putting out weight and bends really nicely throughout..... I’d say joe hit the nail on the head. Get yourself a good look at the Chimera 3. I reckon it will do everything with 2.5oz or more.

Does Dave Lumb come recommended as a rod builder? Seems cheaper than the usual suspects . . .
I've had him build a few rods for me (3 x 1.75 Interceptors and 3 x Torrix 2.5s) and always been really happy with the service. Highly recommended.

Also got a few Dave Lumb built pike rods which I bought second hand - all bang on.

If he's building you a barbel rod - get him to fit it with his isotubes on the tips - really handy.

Yeah he built my pike rods. He’s a good builder.
he’s not taking orders at moment though due to waiting on blanks.
I’m quite bios to mark Tunley for my specialist rods. yes they are dear but by god are they something when done.

Rich those are simply Barbel rod porn!

Weirdly (or not) I've just ordered some carp rods from Mark (due this week yay!) . . fantastically knowledgeable, easy to deal with, superb quality. You get what you pay for, hence my query re Dave Lumb (as a comparison)

Love that isotope and white stripes . . .may have to copy you . . .whats the isotope spec / length?

I wouldn’t say Dave was any less a builder than Mark. The difference is Dave has basic specced rod packages already priced on his website and they are well priced if you take them as they are. Mark has his dark carbons but if you want a widely known blank from mark you are creating a custom order.
isotopes are 25x3 korda green. I supplied them and mark fitted them. They are an awesome job. He built my seekers to the same spec.

I think you’ve forgotten how bad a Vauxhall Cavalier is Terry! I recall ours with fondness, as it’s idle valve jammed intermittently, standing you as you pulled out on a round about... Not even a £9.99 Argos special is the rod equivalent.

He built some p1s for me a couple of months back - basic build which is what I wanted, but fantastic quality workmanship. When doing my research the general consensus is Dave is a no frills builder of quality tools!

Your comment regarding the action of this rod and it coming alive when hooked up to a lump, or similar, nails it. Yes the blank I have is a no frills workmanlike rod, which is how I like it. Although I only fish one rod, I have pairs of my usual go to rods, wouldn't hesitate in using Bob the rod to build it. He also whips a simple Drennan isotope rubber tubing holder, which has performed well with no wrap ups.
Tooled up with a quality 4000 size reel, its a nice set up.
However Chris was asking regarding a beefier set up, and I digress, but what is clear I need to up my game on some new 2lb plus t.c rods.
