General regular cleaning a wet wipe does as good a job as any while going over the whole rod.
A good smooth over every now and then with a piece of damp fine scotchbrite brings cork back to better than new.
I wouldn’t go at it with an abrasive on every regular clean mind just occasionally when needed.
 
Don't know if you can still get it in the shops but Vim or Ajax powder applied with a nail brush just slightly dampened.
