Continental Purchases

Pre Brexit I often purchsed fishing items in europe, Since then this has become prohibitively expensive.I have looked for a while for a Rive r design rod, sold by A/D for over £400 when current. I had seen one in a few tackle shops in France and Austria. I decided too expensive for me but always seeking something different I saw an 11" feeder heavilly discounted. I enquired if they posted to the UK, (Genrman shops usually refuse). The reply was yes and I was invited to put the rod in a basket and buy. When I did the carriage came up, as I expected at more than the rod. I said thanks very much but that was wholly uneconomic. I was told to go back in to the basket which I did, to see carriage at 28E. Anyway it should arrive in a day or so. Intruiged to say the least!.

Looks like 135 pounds but that includes the product and the postage.
Search

Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad

and then look at the gov site.

Maybe vat at 29%. Oh well easy come etc. I will let u know. Vat is paid by the seller so double bubble will be unfair but goverments do Trump!

From my recent experiences (with German/French/Spanish retailers) as long as the VAT is included in the sale price you should be fine. The Dutch retailers seem to be more 'difficult' so I generally steer clear . . .

I got stung buying some heavily discounted ski clothing a few years back but this was still not long after Brexit where some retailers were still in limbo / not set up to deal with exports - UK customs withheld the items and I had to cough up to release the goods which made the savings nowhere near as attractive!

Got a feeling I was wrong about vat being included so expect to be hit with 29% vat.

As long as it’s under the £139 you won’t get anything.
I had some parts turn up from Germany last week and UPS made a nightmare out of it, demanding cash on the doorstep. That paid similar value order from Poland last month was absolutely fine.

On the flip side I was in the Netherlands end of last month and claimed the tax back at customs in the airport, got a very nice discount. All paid back within days and a nice simple form.

That's encouraging Stephen. Tbh if it costs me 150 instead of 124£ then I can live with that. I am old now, made more mistakes than most and survived. It's a want rod so , so what. Still would like the r design 11, if anyone has one. Ha!. I will accurately record and disclose what I am charged.

Not arrived yet but tracking says its with parcel force in essex. Hopefully Monday it will arrive. Looking for a nice reel for it now.
