Coarse Fisherman magazine

:(Sad news Fred, that was a magazine i remember reading when i was a young boy and one of the only magazines i still occasionaly buy.

Richie

Definitely not Matt, CAT is still out there.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Lewis, you can't get hold of the mags on the store shelves, I think they effectively have to buy the space.
Look at the offers you get for annual subscriptions compared to shop price.
They need to rely/survive on an annual subscription readership, but as usual we,the angler, as with a lot of things, don't support them and the before we know it, they've gone.

Your corner tackle shop can't be far away from going the same way.

gutted...n....traumatised.....where do i go from here??????
all is not lost....all current subsribers will now be recieving "total coarse fishing " until thier subsriptions run out as a gesture of goodwill on behalf of dhp publication.
well.....at least thats the message that replaces the absent coarse fisherman web site.

To be honest I think CAT is a much better magazine so if anyone is lost as to what to buy now.... Go for CAT! Less adverts, better writers, more interesting/thought provoking articles. Still a shame CF has gone though.

It is always a shame to see things like this happen. I suppose I am partly to blame - stopped buying it due to outrageously obvious product placement in articles. In the end it was like reading one long advert.

Nick,

Quite agree. CAT is a far superior magazine and long may it last. I regularly read both but found CF to be too full of product placement with a high proportion of articles that were just adverts for the writer's sponsor(s).

I will miss Tony Miles' articles in CF as I have always found him to be one of the better writers and he was not product biased but he is also a regular contributor to CAT so I can still get my regular fix. I will also miss John Bailey's thoughtful pieces.

It is always sad to see a magazine go to the wall but with the Supermarkets and the likes of Smiths controlling what is available 'off the shelf', the availability of these specialist magazines is restricted to the small independent newsagents and they are a dying breed. I'm fortunate in that there is still a newsagent (Isaacs) in Southampton that stocks more or less everything under the sun and carried both CAT and CF as well as all the Carp mags, TCF, IYCF etc.

Dave

Such a shame. Coarse Fisherman was one of the very few coarse angling mags left out there that wasn't dominated by pole and commercial pool match fishing articles (IYCF is guilty of this). I have recently gone cold turkey as far as buying mags is concerned. I'm into my second month without a single mag. I have however thought of subscribing to The Waterlog, although it is more expensive and only comes out quarterly, it does have some top contibutors such as Chris Yates, worth waiting 3 months at a time for!

i stopped buying IYCF because of the articles tend to be about pool match fishing, i however like CAT, hard to find, the last issue i found was Junes, some good stuff in there including Pete readings article on barbel decline.

used to buy it once upon a time but in the end found certain articles very repeatative, now i save the money and buy a nice book from medlar

i did 30yrs in the retail newspaper trade .supermarkets know nothing about the newsagency trade.specialist mags do not feature on their shelves.{angling monthlies].they have been the dearth of the local news trade shutting shop after shop down and in the process not catering for the mag that you need.in fact if you speak to the shelf stacker they know little about the books other than the tv papers.the first job i do when entering the supermarket is go to the rack and pick the books up off the floor and stack them in a proper manner.i could write a book about it.

Carp And Coarse is ok, though it tends to be a bit Cemex orientated. It's is almost devoid of the product placement and mass advertising that other magazines seem to be obliterated with. It is also slightly more tipped towards the across-the-board specimen angler, rather than the carp or commercial match end that other magazines seem to polarise themselves towards.

Used to buy CF then CAT and like Haydn have switched to Coarse and Carp much better article's with some good contributers. It is Cemex bias but not so much its spoils it. Also the lack of bias product reviews is a good thing always makes me a little mad reading every piece of tackle in Cf and Cat is awesome seems they never trial something and find it out to be p-poor.

Yes Coarse And Carp is probably the best of the bunch at the moment. They also carry articles that differ from the usual " I turned up, baited this swim and caught this fish". The articles by peter Rolfe on the Crucian carp are a couple that spring to mind. Much more interesting and thought provoking than watching some pole-ace "bagging up" with the latest wonder-bait at Alders farm or some other such angling fast-fish joint.

Clive, you were right about that joke thread being pulled. Maybe a little over-zelous with the cencorship perhaps. After all, no swearing, no victim(apart from George Michael, and he's fair game), just a couple of light-hearted jokes. Seems that BFW has had a sense of humour by-pass.

This was the only Mag i bought monthly, and a shame it has come to the end of its line. The majority of the articles were very good and unique and i always seemed to learn something that improved my game.
I do occasionally do the WHSmith check on Angling mags, but when i see well known anglers, using brand new rods, tackle etc, and using there sponsored bait they quickly end up back on the shelves.

I know exactly what you mean Jon, it really is so irritating. I am not sure which is worse...the rather more genteel types, or the more blatant 'in yer face...'ave iiiit' toss pots.

It really is amazing just how many people fishing...and the specimen carp fishing industry in particular... has managed to afford a great living to, from the originators of the 'Big Hype', such as Paisley and Hall, to the seemingly endless stream of brand new 'Instant Experts' the magazines keep foisting on to us, the gullible punters.

It seems to me that as the specimen carp fishing bubble shows signs of slowly deflating, they are attempting to push commercial pond fishing, and to a lesser extent barbel fishing, as the 'new carp fishing'. Sadly, this probably means more and more mags dedicated to that, and more and more fifteen year old 'experts' trying to sell us as many as possible of the latest 'all singing, bell ringing, catch instantly' gadgets the Chinese factories can churn out.

How lovely

Cheers, Dave.
