Chub Rod Advice

I’m looking for recommendations for a decent All Round chub Rod. I fish the ribble and at the moment use a heavy feeder rod, but would rather have a dedicated chub Rod, any ideas or advice on what to get thanks

I got a couple of Drennan Super Specialist Twin Tip Duos back in the Summer. I’ve been using them for my Autumn & Winter chubbing this season and have been very impressed!

I’ve only used them with the Avon top section, but the different quiver tips certainly add a bit of versatility, for those that need it.

Mine are the 1.5lb test curve, which is capable of chucking a big drennan maggot feeder or small/medium cage feeder about at short distances, which is all I’ve needed on the Dorset Stour and Hants Avon.

They’re relatively lightweight, but well balanced, I’ve managed a couple of sixes in quite a snaggy spot and a typically bullish low seven on them, as well as a few smaller chevs. I was pleasantly surprised by the ‘bit extra’ they had in the butt when I needed it.

They’re available in 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75lb tc (I think).

I really like my Drennan series 7 avon/ quiver 1.5 lb for chub, but I tend to fish small rivers so don't know if it would be any good for the Ribble. It's got a lovely through action that just keeps going, so plenty of grunt if needed.

Another thumbs up for the Drennan Twin Tip Duo, mine is the 11ft 1.5lb version - just wish I got to use it more!!

All depends on how you fish for chub ?. If you chucking out feeders etc I myself use small leads or swans shots on river Severn and been using drennan specialist twin duo. I like my bait to work the swim and with these rods I can feel everything.

Agree completely, I think the 1.5tc 12ft covers most of the bases though. I probably would’ve considered the 1.25tc, but there are days when dropping down to a single maggot on a size 20 and bolt rig/large maggot feeder is all that works. I’d probably catch three times more trotting on these days, but I’m a lazy git...

Putting one of the large drennan maggot feeders out more than a couple of rod lengths out would be a bit of a stretch with the 1.25 tc, I think.

If I wasn’t planning on getting some customs done this year, I’d be seriously considering the 1.75 tc as new barbel rods.

I bought the 12ft, 1.25 Drennan Twin Tip Duo and it is a nice rod but other than being a foot longer than my old John Wilson (model AQ1102) I don't feel it is that much better.

I’ve looked at the Drennan in 1.5 tc , look quality , just wanted to see what else was out there , thanks

Drennan duos are great rods, also if you can find one a Drennan DRX river feeder 12’10”; lovely forgiving action, sensitive tips and plenty of beef for keeping Chub out of near side snags which they just love!!

There are always JW Avon rods on eBay fetching the 50-60 pound mark. They are about as good as chub rods get.
couple it up with an acolyte plus float rod and your good to go tackle Chub with the stick too. (Best way to catch them imo)

I have two JW that I use for roach , but at 1-25 think there a bit undergunned for the ribble .

I can recommend the Free Spirit CTX Tamer in the 1.5TC for chub fishing on the ribble. Used it for a couple of seasons now for both chub and roach (mainly roach) 😄 Prior to this for quite a few years I was using a Harrison Sullis 1.6TC which is a lovely rod, but not quite as soft action as the Tamer. The avon section of the Tamer is also quality and is gets used a lot trotting livebaits for perch. The quiver section comes with one 2.5 push in tip, but you can buy other tips separate. It can also handle chucking decent feeders across to the far bank snags of the river and is sensitive enough in NSL conditions. I had it on the river Saturday roach fishing with 12ft of water on lobbing out a 3oz feeder no problem. Not the cheapest rod but certainly up to the job of what you want...

Coming back to angling after a very long lay off, I bought a pair of Rovex John Wilson Avon Quiver Deluxe rods. They have a 1.5 tc Avon top and a separate quiver top with 3 different quiver-tips. There is a two foot intermediate section which inserts just above the handle, so you can fish it at 11 ft or as I normally do at 13 ft. I've been fortunate to catch chub to 7.11 off of the Dorset Stour and 7.3 off of the Hants Avon in the last two winters. I bought them for about £75 each new and I'm very happy with them. (see pic).
