cheap hooks?

Chatted to a chap on the kennet yesterday who had lost the two barbel he had hooked due to the hook (10) snapping!

I know couple of my pals also experienced this. These were the hooks sold in 50/100 quantities on ebay. Dumped mine without using and sticking to the ever reliable D7's.

Anyone else had problems with those bought in bulk from ebay specifically?

Been using Size 8 Teflon rapiers for at least 3 years and cannot recommend them highly. Prior to that it was D7s but got fed up with the point burring over.

They are cheap for a reason :p

Thought you would have known better Foxy? Such a vital part of the set up....

Didn't use 'em John.

But got to admit tempted as the Raptors are so expensive.

Had a play with them and they snap before the bend. Too brittle I guess.

I'm Still in the Pink Dean:D

Just warning others. Nothing worse than losing that special fish. Mind you, a size 10 is a real girly barbel hook.;):eek::eek:

Why spend a lot of money on rods and reels and then skimp on the most important bit ? 50p is hardly expensive !!!

Just recently had issues with the drennan barbless red carp maggot hooks, they look an ideal hook for red maggot and caster fishing but had a number opening up on me,one 18 opened on a roach about a 1lb.So be wary everyone trying them for grayling soon.

Agreed you get what you pay for cheap for a very good reason there s**t

Thanks for the heads up Mark. Looked at them.

Like the drennan match green packet for the silvers incl grayling.

I've been using the Korum Xpert Power hooks (in a size 10) recently, having lost a couple of fish; one to a straightened Pallatrax ;The Hook' and the other to a new Korda Wide Gape. The Korum hooks seem to retain their sharpness and are strong.

Bearing the above in mind, I'm also quite open to the possibility that the losses were isolated incidents, and perhaps the fish were hooked in an unusual way. I just don't know.

I like your D7's Graham and the short shank wide gape T6 plus those Gardner Target Range are a nice hook really sticky sharp...

Following Jon's recommendation of the size 8 rapiers on ebay I too have used them and they have been flawless. Unfortunately they are no longer available in this size from the supplier.

I once had a few lost fish due to drennan super specialists straightening, it had never happened before and it occurred from more than one packet, turned out to be a faulty batch, never happened since, so you can always get a rogue batch of any hook.

Graham, completely off the subject but, have you got a phone number or email address for Dave Durrant please, i lost a lot of numbers when i changed phones:)
