Chasing chub....

I do really push my rods though to the point sometimes I think “will it snap”
Broke a couple of shimano matches in the past doing so but most often surprise me as being more capable than I thought.

Acolytes are probably the most underrated rods I’ve used. They seem to reach what I believe is their limit very quickly but the buggers always have more to go. Sensational rods really

Me too, manys the time i've just hit and held barbel and said to myself "it it snaps, it snaps".
Very often i've had rods flatten out, they look like a letter L.
One rod I have and really like for barbel is a drennan im8 specimen float rod.
Yyes, I agree on the acolytes, fantastic rods, again, i've used mine to hit and hold barbel into double figures....beats me how people manage to break them as they do!

Tip breakages from frap ups would be my guess. Same way most normark 2000/3000 rods got their bad reputation

The rivers round these parts have been up way to high for my preferance to trott a float, so with one of them dropping off to "only just" a fishable level for me to wade out I decided to give it a go for a couple of hours this afternoon. Because of the river level being higer I was forced into wearing chest waders rather than my normal thigh waders... what a pain in the harris when I wanted a slash!
Anyhow, the inconvenience caused by the waders was well worth tolerating as they meant I could wade out far enough to enable me to cast to the sweet spot 😉.
No chub!....just barbel and dace, but to be honest, I was targetting barbel.
I used a 14ft drennan acolyte plus float rod, a youngs RS centrepin reel and 6lb line straight through to a size 14s drennan superspade.
Here's a few pic's from the session....

Nice work how do you find the RS ? I’m considering one

Hello Daniel, I very much like the RS, the ratchet lever is a little stiff, but I prefer it that way and have no prob's operating it via one finger.
IMO, I think the RS is one of the best reels youngs have ever produced...JMO of course 😉.

I had a couple of hours swimming the stream this afternoon, I was targetting barbel and did ok managing to land five.... only little ones though. I lost another because it was lightly hooked and the hook pulled out of it. I also had a couple of chub and a solitary dace. I was pleased with the result because the last couple of times i've gone out specifically to catch some barbel i've failed, only catching chub, dace and roach. I wraped up and hoofed off earlier than planned because it started to rain heavy and it didn't look as though it was going to stop anytime soon....oh, the reel worked fine in the rain lol. Infact while I was faffing about trying to take a quick snap of a fish whilst stood mid river I dropped my rod and reel in the water, submerging my reel totally and it still worked perfectly after the dunking 🙂.
I used the combination of a 14ft browning sphere waggler rod and a youngs triton reel which worked very well together. The guard on the reel doesn't inhibit casting because it's a large bickerdyke type guard.
Anyhow, enough waffling from me, here's a few snaps from the session....

Nice to see the Triton on your Sphere Ian! I didn’t realise you had one 🙂

I got my maggots 6 weeks ago, it's 3 weeks today since I last went fishing and the remaining shrunken few magg's needed using up or throwing away. Maggots being so expensive these days I was loathe to skim them away and so I spooled a reel up with line and made a rod up ready to and do a bit of trotting for chub during the last hour of daylight today. To be honest I would have been as well throwing the shrivelled old magg's away and chillin' out infront of the fire.
The recent temp's round these parts have been below freezing at night, and peaking at about 5 degrees during the day. The car thermometer read 5 degrees at 2.40pm when I arrived at the farm to park up, but there was a biting wind which made it feel well below freezing!
No wading today, just casting from the bank in the hope of catching a few chub. Overall the session was a disaster really, I reckon a combination of the recent drop in temp's, not enough bait, crappy bait, and that biting wind were all contributors for todays lack of chub.....oh, and not enough time.
I used the free spirit hi S 12ft power float rod and a Chris Lythe 1915 copy centrepin reel, very nice too 🙂.
The chub weren't impressed by my fishing tackle, or my offerings and this was the only one I caught 😶.

Lovely always like these updates

How do you like the the hi s for that kind of fishing ? I have just had the handle re done as my pins where not quite fitting right and a bit tight. I’ll post pics when I get it back.

Thanks Daniel 🙂.

The rod is ok, nice and stiff, great for casting and mending line etc, it just lacks power for me when the chub try to kite into the bankside veg, or even when they bolt for the snags under my feet, it just bends too much! Becuase I know their antics I can compensate for the bend in the rod though. If the place you fish hasn't got much bankside veg below the surface then the rod is fine. I wouldn't recommend using it for barbel if trotting down the side of a sunken tree etc, the kind of snag a barbel will try to run and hide under, because imo the rod just isn't powerful enough. Obviously, that's jmo and others may not agree 🙂👍.

Well you fared better than me, I went out for a few hrs yesterday on what seemed perfect conditions for a perch or chub….had some lovely fresh maggots, dendras and big fat lobworms….I didn’t even have a tap😩

I think you can put it down to the conditions, sudden drop in temp’s etc.

Thanks Daniel 🙂.

I’m a thinking of using it for big perch

It would be ideal for that, but so would a 12ft acolyte carp waggler, if it is a 12ft rod you want. The accy carp wagglers are excellent rods imo.
Im in the middle of sorting my float rod armoury out , I hear good things re the acolytes the new sounds nice.

I want something for scratching in the winter little silvers etc so ultra

Something for decent Rudd and roach

Something for chub

Something for perch

Something for tench and carp

Something for grayling

If you get where I’m going a room for each species or group of.

So I’m looking at the carp wagler the ultra the plus and the new specialist.

I would forgo to hi s to fund it

I’m looking at all lengths depending on waters
