Centrepin Lube

I've recently found a can of Scotts Pitstop L in my garage, left in my car when it was serviced by the main dealer...On reading the label the words " with PTFE" jumped out...I've decided to give it a try on my Rapidex and it runs an absolute treat. I can recommend it as a 'pin lube and it's also waterproof !!...worth a try you 'pin me....

Teflon is great stuff, but some of the lubes that contain it can also leave residues. I tried some PTFE lobe oil from my bike chain on a pin and it was great at first, but did seem to remain and build up overtime, unlike sewing machine oil, which washes off. This is obviously great on a bike chain and on a centre pin if you clean them regularly. However if you are a lazy sod like me, who cleans the reel by dipping it in the river, it isn't such a good idea!

A few top-end reel makers advise that you should never use WD40; one goes so far as to say it invalidates any guarantee. I always use plain old 3-in-1 and find it works a treat. I think it was Garry Mills who told me at a recent show that WD lacks the viscocity that a good c'pin oil needs to ensure that the metals do not contact and thus wear.

Incidentally, and not meaning to be pedantic, but I just wikipedia'd WD40 and it has the formulation - at least what is thought to be the formulation as it supposed to be a trade secret, one of the reasons that WD40 has never been patented is to avoid disclosing the formula.
Wikipedia also states the following:
There is a popular urban legend that the key ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil.[3] However, the WD-40 web site states that it is a petroleum based product [4]

So for all those chaps spraying their dead-baits with WD, you may as well dip it in petrol.

oh ,dear he's mentioned the WD40 word (stone him everyone :p ) ,it certanly works as a cleaner ,a penertrating oil ,even as a aluminum oxid remover /treatment and as a de-greaser and water repellant but is like holy water too vampires is wd40 too lubricating centrepins .

oh ,and the fish oil thing is a old wife's (or should that be fishwife's) tale ,when tested on a spectrogrph thingy (gaspectromiter) it showed no fish oil content ,but a mixture of verious hydrocarbons and inhibiters and a blend of synthetic and natural oils and acids .

as a fish attractant ,yes sometimes but then a lot of fish live ,eat and digest their own effluent .so theres no accounting for taste

WD40 is great, your never let a nice fish slip through your hands again...lol

Tacklebox in Kent for the rest of them.
