That's the thing, many thought that using a 'pin on your rod would make you a happier more content angler, the reality for many is frustration tangles and the thing was consigned to the garage for the next generation to find, what goes round comes round.

We had a huge love in a few years back with cheapo pins that were pretty to look at but soon fell apart, and common sense prevailed and we returned to out bait runners.

Not as pretty but perfectly understandable. :)

I've tried many times to familarise myself with my centrepin, each time I fish with it I end up taking off and putting my baitrunner back on, as Neil says. I usually try it a couple of times a season, and the same thing always happens. I suppose I should make more of an effort.

Cheapo pins? avoid them

Bearings or true-pin? Bearings are more free running in general, but "spins for ages" is no advantage. As long as you hold rod then bearings fine, else beware of overruns.

Line off top or bottom? whatever you prefer

Line guide / guard? If it suits you, but it limits your casting options

Side cast? Yes, easier maybe. Line twists yes so braid is the answer.

I use? Fred Crouch match aerial types (true pins), line off bottom, side or Wallis, big rivers or small.

I have? Ten (or so) aerials, one Aventa Pro (used when trundling), two Shimano baitrunners (never used)

My article (see link in my signature) may help answer any other questions.

So is using a centrepin better?, more rewarding?, more of a joy?

No, no and no.

Would I choose a centrepin over a baitrunner (or fixed spool)? Yes

and if I had to cast more than 25 yards? I doubt it, but then i never fish at that range.

Could I cast over 25 yds with a centrepin? Yes, but I don't think it is the right reel for that anyway. Yes, i have cast 75 yds but demo only.

Having cast with my centrepin and got my bait set would I be comfortable if a big barbel picked it up? Absolutely yes. Would I feel the same with a baitrunner? Absolutely no. Why? Gears, settings, funny coffee grinding handle, having to crank and wind (or whatever describes the necessary action), everything seemingly unbalanced.

Do I think baitrunner users are odd? Absolutely not

Do I think centrepin users are in any way elite? Absolutely not.

How many of my last, say, 200 barbel we're caught when using a centrepin? 200
How many of my last, say, 200 barbel we're caught when using a baitrunner? Zero

Make that 500, same result
Make that "any number" in the last 30 years, same result.

You make your choice and enjoy.

I just clicked on your link and had to do it again a couple of times just to hear that sound!! It sounds like a nice Barbel Paul!!??

I've got both, the Sheffield is a nicer reel but the Aventa is still great for trotting. I think the Sheffield is my favorite bit of fishing kit at the moment. I got myself a new trotting rod recently, I look like a bit of an all the gear and no idea but I don't really care, well made quality tackle tickles my fancy and gets me out on the bank

I'm a bottom man, but I'm relatively new to trotting and I'm a bit too lazy to put the extra work in too have the line off the top

I'd like to say it was my 18+ ;) but I cheated Shaun - I recorded it using my laptop in my bedroom :D

I edited it as an mp3 and it makes a nice text notification on a mobile :D

Haha....very effective all the same, I was imagining you fumbling with the phone as the fish is taking off with the rod next to you!!

The Bewick is a lovely light pin and a joy to use.........once it is run in, Being a true pin it is not as smooth out of the box as an equivalent bearing model and needs running in as it can be a bit 'snatchy' when new. Just get yourself the Luther boxset, sit in front of the telly and watch the whole lot whilst spinning it. Once run in it is a decent reel and as light as anything out there. Some decent prices around on it also.

thanks all for your replys :) really wont to give this pining a go this summer!
