Catch report software

Nathan, I have just looked through all my old software and found one from 2005 that my mate designed for me, It allows you to add sessions with timings, river, tackle, species, weather & photographs, if your happy with the one you have then thats fine if not PM me, I cant make it a link as it wasnt designed for public domain.
cheers
George

Thanks for all of your replies, but as I guessed there is no proper software in the market. I'll be back hopefully with something amazing! :)

Chris G - Being able to report the following would be great: Species, picture, weight, river, location/stretch, swim, time, date, weather, river conditions, moon/sun phase, bait, bait location (near bank/far bank/middle/under bush), tactics (ledger, float, rolling meat, etc)..... All info must be enabled to make reports - such as most successful bait/swim/method/near or far bank, etc - also PB's in a 'hall of fame' type way...so many ideas!
)

Hi Ben.

Some nice ideas in there, and to be honest not too tricky to put together.
Would make sense if it was developed as a website, but with an application PC/MAC/Phone that would let you add and review catch reports when on the bank. Could certainly then allow anglers to analyse their catches based on a multitude of elements, e.g. moon phase, weather, pressure, bait and the like.

There may also be some larger benefit, if anglers were happy to share/save certain info about their catches, e.g. general location e.g. Great Ouse, Radwell, Species and weight (would leave the other info private) given enough people contributing should provide some data for the EA/Angling Trust, to support some of our arguments against the likes of Otters impact on our rivers for example. Being able to provide evidence on these matters over time would greatly help support anglers views.

Gonna go away and have a good think about it, think there could be something really good we could develop here.

A question to all, a) would you use it? b) if no, what value could it add to change your mind?

Chris.

I've thought about this kind of project before. I shelved the idea due to various concerns.

As a developer, I would want my app to be flexible, such that it would be as simple or in-depth as the user wanted it to be.

I wish you luck, if I had more time I would have tried it, so I will be interested to see how you get on...

I would probably use it, Darren is right though it would be useful if it could be customisable and configurable to some degree. Mind you if it were to be used to collate data, certain database fields would have to be fixed. I'd like an app for a phone that could be transferred into a more complex PC host program. That's because I have a lousy memory and like to keep records.

I do but it gets all dirty and wet - I knew that's what you'd say Mike! Was up your way Sunday before last meeting a fellow Tollertonian, he was a nice bloke too.

Conrad

Hello Conrad ; Tollertonian - brilliant ! I write my diary as soon as I get home , no matter what time of the day, or sometimes night . It's great fun reading back through them, re living the joys and frustrations of that moment in time . My diaries go back to 1969 and are my most treasured fishing posessions . In more pragmatic terms keeping a record can be really useful especially in terms of looking back at what method / bait worked in particular conditions . Filling them in can sometimes be a chore when you are tired and hungry or have had a hard session but I think the effort is always worth it . Anyway we are straying a long way from software here , I have no idea .....

Re the fellow Tollertonian , you haven't been flogging Bowes any more rods have you ? Don't encourage him , tackle tart doesn't even begin to cover it ...

Hi Chris,
As I suspected, there are fellow fishermen out there who would prefer to use their computer ad a keeper of records instead of the trusted (but old) pen and paper. The advantage of keeping an electronic database is that you can search! If you find yourself facing conditions before you go out, you can do a quick search and all the relevant info comes to you in minutes instead of trawling through years of paper notes.

I would certainly be interested to work on a project with someone who has the skills for developing a catch report database and be the sales and marketing force behind it. I can already see myself on Dragons Den! :)

No his name is Jeff Metcalf, barbel angler and game fishing instructor - my fly casting coach for 2 hours. A fellow barbler too and a jolly nice bloke!

I do not wish to fuel Robin's addiction so I won't sell him any more rods. Besides I don't have any spare rods these days.

Conrad

The CSG Records Officer has every Group record from 1972 entered on a MS Access database.
It really is quite amazing the amount of information that can be extracted. It lists every fish, member, bait, method, river and water conditions etc, etc from the very start.
MS do some very useful on-line tutorials, a great way to pass away the close season.

Mr Metcalfe is indeed a grand fellow , spent many a happy hour in his company . As you say Conrad he is a superb fluff chucker , there is even a picture of me on his website home page thrashing the waters of the upper Derwent in to a lather ! Top bloke and a superb casting tutor . You are right Conrad, Mr Bowes has enough rods ...

Hi Ben, I have used Mark Partridges spread sheet reports for 4 years now and they are simple enough to use and for me sufficiently comprehensive. I don't think he has re-registered on here due to stinginess but if you wish I can PM his e-mail address to you and I am sure he would send you a copy.

Bryce...I could do with it if you don't mind linking me to Mark by email??
Thanks
Rich.

Apologies in resureccting an old post, but thought I would provide an update. I have indeed (slowly) been pulling this together and am close to having a prototype. Would any developers out there want to help out? My php (sorry for getting a bit tecchy!) skills are ok, but could do with and expert to move things along a bit!

The main thing holding it up at the moment, is that I am after a historical weather database, just enter your catch location and date and the weather conditions would pull in automatically.

Would people be against paying say £25 per year for a service if it was good enough? Will post up a summary of the features I am looking to include this evening. The charge would generally cover the cost of hosting it and the like.

Also, once I get a bit closer to a usable example, would any of you fancy testing it?
