cardinal 55/54 v shimanos

Yeah i realised that after i posted it, but i couldn't be bothered to delete! Garcia was some frog chap who did no real harm, Leeda ? now thats a different story :)

My Shimano list by the way

3500 triton sea spins, good front drag/ worst line lay of any reel i've ever seen !
4500 aero baitrunners, 1 years Piking and the gears on all 3 collapsed
8000 aerlex, bought for spodding, gears stripped within a month, replacement one did the same.
4000 stradic fighting drags, clutches all packed up as did my mates.
10,000 XTE, clutches all sticking now
5000 XTEAs Pretty good so far !

So as you can see i,ve given them a fair go !

Wurzel, All far east ABU stuff is not good, last fixed spool reel made in Sweden was the Suveran and that was !!

LEEDA , wash your mouth out lad ! My Mitchell classic would be the first run of the dab bail Mitchell match reels , works of art ...well apart from the bail arm springs which are a bit ' delicate ' shall we say

Si,

"Wurzel, All far east ABU stuff is not good, last fixed spool reel made in Sweden was the Suveran and that was !!"

Hope not, ive just bought two 7000i C3s.:( Heard good things about them, but i suppose time will tell.

Be alright if you only use em once in a while mate :)
Spoke to Beaney today, he tells me his Shiney new 4000D's have both been back to the menders twice !!!

Me thinks you is avin a larf, the rest I believe bbbut Beany spending that on one reel, hmm.
A pair, no bleedin chance! :)

The rest of that sentence sounds very plausible though.

I have a pair of Suverans.................. brilliant reels which i will be using again soon.

GTE-C's, they are not too my liking, the clutch is poor as it the baitrunner clutch/mech, it is by no means smooth and for some strange reason my line is getting tangled up under the spool skirts.

I have used the 54 and 55's for barbel, the clutches are superb but i never trusted the spools, i have several explode while in use, that said i did source some aluminium spools for my 54's which are currently being used for float fishing.

I don't think you can compare the 54/55 and the Baitrunner, it would be akin to comparing an E-type Jaguar to the new XK-R, both are superb at what they are but are from two totally different era's but equally do a job today................ does that make sense?

55 for barbel and the 54 for other fishing. I used the 54 for a while but i found the reel was a little small.

Tom, what did you do to bust the spools ? i used 54s 55s and 57s for 20 odd years and never had one go. I have seen two go that were stored for over 10 years with line on them, apparently thats a no-no :)

54s for barbel
55s for pit fishing (Tench Bream)
57s Pike

Simon, when i bought the reels they came with several spools, on closer inspection after they had exploded they all had a hair line crack on the inside of the top lip of the spool............. they spools where very old and faded!

I believe it is a common problem and they can explode when put under pressure, no such problem with the aluminium spools.

Some of you must be brutal with your reels. I have a few different models mentioned as needing repeated repairs. Until this season I was still using Baitrunner 5010 GTs for carping and barbelling that must be at least fifteen years old. Also have a pair of the original Japanese Stradic GTMs that are a minimum of ten years old and have also never had an issue. Happy to accept that the clutches aren't the best but despite the reels being hammered they've never failed.

I've been using my 54's on and off for the last 20 years. I use shimanos when fishing at range but for close work, particularly touch legering, the 54 is the tool for the job. Superb clutch.
Been tempted to put them up for sale a few times, boxed, manuals etc......but glad i never did.

Steve
