Broken JRC Chair - aluminium welder in Wakefield area?

Neil Kirk

Senior Member
I have a 30 year old JRC Specialist chair which I am very attached to (no, nothing to do with superglue!).

It broke when a suporting metal strap under the seat parted from the main frame (yes its a bad design). It happened before maybe 15 years ago and I got someone in Barnet to weld it. From what I can recall it needed specialist welding because it is aluminium.

I am now in Leeds/Wakefield and it needs fixing again. Am I correct that it needs an aluminium welder and does anyone know of such a person within 20 miles of East Ardsley WF3 2EG?

Cheers

Hi Neil,
Try searching for metal fabricators in your area. Most will be just steel, but I bet if you ask one they will know of a local guy who does aluminium.

Hi Neil

Is it the chair with the flat support under the front of the chair that is welded to the side tubes?

I fixed mine over 25 years ago using some 16swg aluminium straps that I screwed to the flat piece. I'm no engineer but with a hacksaw, a hammer and a drill it was an easy job :p

You can see the broken weld in the pictures

Has never let me down since, and far easier than finding a welder (and stronger too I'd say)

Hi Paul

That is the chair - I had forgotten we had the same chair.

That looks a very good solution. Where would I source the metal straps and screws from?

Thanks

I can send you screws, washers and nyloc nuts, but I don't know where you can get sheet alum alloy from.

I'll do some measurements (done, see below) and let you know the sizes of pieces you need, maybe someone can help?

You need 2 pieces each 6 inches long by 1.3/4 inches wide
