Bivvy Heaters

It’s not the fuel that’s the problem, it’s a the lack of ventilation combined with using it in the confines of a bivvy say.
Any fuel used in these situations has the potential to become a danger without the proper precautions.

This was a very sad outcome to an evening's fishing but almost every death from carbon monoxide is preventable.

CO alarms are cheap and they are pretty robust. I have battery powered alarm in my travel bag and I use it when I stay in hotels and if I go camping. It is a shame that some of the bigger brands have not acknowledged the seriousness of this risk and brought out a camo or olive CO alarm. What about linking one to the bite alarms!

They would be a great stocking filler for most anglers who bivvy up. Clubs and syndicates could require their use too but there will probably be more deaths before there is a suitable response.

CO is odourless, colourless and heavier than air and people are unaware of the gas. If you are sitting up you may not experience any problems but when you lay back on your bed you will enter the CO zone and fall asleep in it for the last time. It is the same for anglers who fish with their kids or dogs. They are sitting up while the child or dog is asleep and in danger. What a terrible scenario and so easily sorted.

I had a look at the available types and this one looks okay for your £500 bivvy, It is under £30 and it lasts ten years.

  • INDOOR & OUTDOOR USE – Our portable lithium battery CO alarm is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. It is accurate and durable. It is small and light to be carried around. You can use it at home, in your office, in your tent and RV, and wherever the CO level might be a concern.
