Depends on what time of year it is for me and where I'm fishing. Where I fish on the lower severn I may put 8-10 feeder fulls in at the start of a session and then set up, get comfy, brew up and begin and cast every 15 minutes to begin with.

However, on certain pegs that I know hold fish because of a snag or natural bait I don't put any extra feed in and just cast every 10-15 mins to begin with. I do hasten to add this is only because I know the stretch. I have seen other people pile the bait in and blank but then do the same at the end of the season and have great success.

I think it's down to whatever you have confidence in and also whether you know that fish are there or you have to draw them in- in which case a bed of bait would be successful. I think it's a case of trial by error. Everyone will have varied opinions on what they have success with. Lastly, I do put a bed of groundba it down but do not pile in kg's of boilies, however I know some people who do this and have had great success- best way is get out there and try it for yourself.

Jamie,

My experience of both match and specimen type angling is that feeding the swim is the key to maximizing what it can produce for you on the day. I also find that it is best to approach each day as if it were a one off without pre conceived ideas. Deciding that conditions will be "perfect" the evening before fishing and making a plan to fill it in irrespective prior to fishing is not a good way to go. As is so often written you can put it in but you cant take it out. I much prefer to just start fishing with minimal feed and to gauge the level of activity and then step the feed up gradually and try and see how the fish respond.
