BFW Donation for a wreath for steve stringer

Just a small footnote to this sad event.

I hear that Steve managed to catch a 12lb+ plus Barbel about 40 mins before packing up time.

Made me feel a bit better.

Close the thread? Why?

RIP to a barbel angler that (as far as I know) I never met. When I lived in London I used to fish the Kennet regularly and it is possible our paths (or even lines!) crossed at sometime!

Donation for a plaque/whatever made by PayPal.

I don't see a need to close the thread.

Hi all,

We won't be closing the thread, that suggestion was made after some confusion over who is organising a plaque.

I've recently had this nice email from Amy Stringer that she is happy for me to post:

Hi Andy

I have left a message on the main number, but I wasn't sure who picked it up.

I'm Steve Stringer's daughter..I just wanted to say thank you for everything you're doing to raise money for dad. I know he'd be extremely touched and grateful.

We would also like to give you the funeral details in case you or any of the other anglers wanted to come...you are all very welcome and it would be lovely to meet some of the people dad knew from the river.

The cremation will take place at the Basingstoke crematorium at 10.15am on Friday 15 November...we have been told to arrive by 10am. It's going to be a short ceremony about dad with no religious element to it. We will then be going to a pub afterwards for anyone who would like to join us.

I saw you were collecting for a reef. We were not planning on doing flowers, but a reef from those who knew dad and understand his love for fishing would be lovely. Only the reef (if you would still like to do this) and some flowers from his work will be there. Other than that, we were asking for donations to the MS Society as dad suffered with MS for over 30 years. Obviously we wouldn't expect you all to donate to that too though!

We were going to research getting a plack for dad and were going to talk to Del about that. I noticed you were raising money for this so it would be great to link up. We wanted to put something in the spot where he died, to the left as you reach the river.

Thank you for all your support and kind words about dad. It brings us great comfort to know that lots of people care and knew dad...he absolutely loved the river and we have drawn great comfort from the fact that he died doing what he loved (and just after catching a 12lb 9oz barbel...of which we have proof!).

Many thanks and best wishes
Amy

Just a note to say that I've ordered a wreath from us all. We'll quite a lot of money in the pot so we should have a health donation to the MS charity once the plaque is organised.

Well done lads and nice work Andy..

I was hoping to attend Steves funeral but I have a day booked in London with
my wife the same day.

Looking forward to seeing the memorial to Steve whenever I fish the Lower
Benyons.

R.I.P.. Steve.

Very sad story, I hope the good will and sympathy from all on here gives family and friends some comfort at such a sad time.

I spoke to Amy, Steve's daughter a couple of days ago and the family are keen on the idea of a bench near Steve's favourite swim. Amy's going to speak to Del at her dad's funeral tomorrow. After the wreath purchase we still have around £300 in the pot so a bench and bench should be achievable...

Regards,

Andy

Thats a fine idea Andy, should there be a shortfall then im sure that we can make it up...The funeral will be on my mind tomorrow.

Back in the 1980's, i used to see Steve on the Bristol avon at Kellaways. He caught a massive chub,an upper 6, i think from the Kennet that year. In those days a 6lb chub was a rare beast. That fish made me think about fishing for chub when the weather was really cold.I have had a lot of very big chub since, including a brace of 7's, all down to that fish Steve had. Will be thinking of you and that chub tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the great response, and saying goodbye to one of our own.

Hi all,

Just a quick update on the money we raised on BFW after Steve Stringer passed away.

I've heard from Steve's daughter Amy who has said they'd like to plant an English Oak near his favourite swim. They are going to arrange this and will also put a plaque nearby.

After the wreath we sent, we have £305 in the pot so this will be transferred to Amy when she needs it for the tree and plaque. Any surplus will be donated to the MS Society.

Regards,

Andy F
