BFS reel and trotting

This is my first post on this forum. I’ve gleaned lots of great info so I thought I would share my latest experiment reel wise.

I have a few centre pin reels, closed face and fixed spools, but it occurred to me that a BFS reel might trot a float quite well.

As an experiment I purchased a not terribly expensive one just to see how it went and I have to say I think I’ll be using it a lot more for trotting.

The reel is designed to cast 2grams upwards and the light weight spool takes nothing to set it spinning. Being a multiplier there is no line twist and the control you have on the spool is perfect. It’s a light weight and fast retrieve reel. The spool can be tensioned to slow things right down, but I just used my thumb. The spool starts spinning of its own accord as soon as the flioat starts to trot down the swim.

I matched the reel to a team Daiwa 13ft SR3 power float rod, which is rated for up to 8lb line. I managed a small barbel this evening, my smallest of the season in fact, but big enough to test the theory of using a BFS reel for trotting.

I’ll definately be using it again as the initial feel was brilliant.

I love my BFS reels for Perch fishing with small jigs and chebs; however although I can see it working as you describe, I just love trotting with one of my centrepin reels, which you can’t beat 👍🏻

Shimano in Italy used to sell small multipliers for bolo fishing, I can see how well they might work but they didn't seem to catch on and they do not make them anymore.

I’d be really interested in your feedback with how you feel your bfs reel works for trotting if you’d have a session with it?
