Betaine HCl

Senior Member
Morning all,

Again, looking at different bits for inclusion into my cage feeder mix. Just performed a search of BFW archives & there is not much mentioned on neither betaine or betaine HCl.

This is used to a good extent for other species - has anyone had much experience with this.

Thanks again,

Jon

Jon,

Betaine is an excellent attractor; ive included it in powdered form in groundbaits and when coating meat. You dont need to include too much of it. I think i used to use quarter to half a teaspoon in with curry powder when coating meat and about half to one teaspoon with a kilo of groundbait. Never played around with it when making boilies cos i just dont make my own any more, but i'm sure others will have.

Have used it in both forms, but mostly the powdered. Used it along with other ingredients to coat meat like Paul mentions. On meat you can rough up the surface (by scraping with a fork or other suitable device) to retain the coatings that bit longer.
Have also used it in boilie mixes but again tend to buy my boilies now rather than make my own. Still got a freezer full of ingredients.
The powdered form is relatively cheap from some suppliers - last time I bought some it was around £9 per kilo. Notice that CCMoore has it at 10 for 500g.
Remember when I used to 'core' meat and meatballs - cut out the middle and repack with a mash of ingredients that you may fancy. This gave a trail of bits and attractors. Found this method very successful.
Hope this helps,
Cheers

Was not sure as to the relevance with respect to barbel.

As has been outlined above, I was surprised that it could be used by simply dipping a wet hook bait into the powder. Other bits I have gathered is to make a solution dip (20-150g crystal to 150ml water); inclusion into dried baits at 2-5g per kilo (as above); or addition to cooked particles whilst their still warm & allow to soak.

Cheapest I have so far managed is 500g for £4.75 (see http://www.willowgrange.com/feedPriceDetail.asp?feedItemId=517&level2Id=41&feedTypeId=41)

Thanks Paul & Bob for your detailed reply.

Swim Stim Betaine

Old thread i realise guys......but

whilst looking around the bait shop today i kept being drawn/hooked on swim stim betaine green pellets.......was looking at the 1mm micro pellet as a attractor.

Anyone used it and had success?

cheers

I have used them for bream fishing to keep them grubbing around, only problem i could see is they are very light and would wash away!!

Or just buy 8mm,6mm and 4mm pellets and add them to your mix!!
Would not like to guess how much betain is in them.

The green colour is due to the fact that green is supposed to be the most visible colour to fish, try using the link Jon placed in this thread as you can buy betaine crystals and dilute them to a liquid to add to your mix.
