Best reel For trotting when casting distance?

Another reel to consider Mike would be a Daiwa bg magsealed 3000
I’ve owned most of the reels mentioned but prefer this by a long way
It feels so solid all metal body bearing assisted clutch carbon drag washers magsealed faster retrieve and a rubber t shaped knob
They weigh slightly more than the other reels mentioned but I like that on a 13 ft plus rod

Thanks again for all the input.
Graham and Nick for your info I already have a pair of the Stradic 3000S reels which I use for float fishing on lakes paired
with my trusty old Graham Phillips Tench Float rods.
The Stradics have double handles and I fancy a single handle reel for constant casting when trotting rivers.
I will keep an eye out for a TDX but if one doesn't turn up shortly I will probably go for the latest model TDR with single handle

TDR is a great reel. Proved it’s worth over and over for reliability

This any good, Mike ??

Hi Simon
Not sure what you are trying to send me but I don't get involved with facebook so cannot view anything
I am currently waiting for the new model 24 TDR 3012 Single Handle to come up for sale at a reasonable price but all a bit expensive so far
But thanks for trying
Regards
Mike

Remember my first close faced reel that I got on my 14th Birthday that replaced my tiny but reliable Mitchell 308 - Daiwa Harrier 120M

Still use a Daiwa Harrier 125M to this day as my trotting reel of choice - lightweight / fuss and tangle free and can handle specimens larger than you'd assume . . .

Daiwas have always been great reels, they have just got really expensive recently and now get to a point of justifying buying them now...

I was brought up fishing the trent with a Mitchell match, I'm pretty sure they could still do the business nowadays.. my next one would be an Abu 506m, with the pawl removed...

So what qualities are you looking for in a trotting reel?
It’s not often I use a fixed spool for trotting but in situations where I feel it’s advantageous to do so I’d look for afew things that I think are essential for a reel to be good for trotting.

Shortish stem from the foot to the body so I can comfortably reach the the spool lip with my middle finger.
Large diameter spool with short stroke preferably shallow to take 100M of 0.20 or so without the need for backing.
Gear ratio of more than 5:1 is nice and a solid strong bail arm is a must
Relatively Light weight body, front operation clutch and a very smooth clutch is absolutely essential, particularly if you’re protecting fine lines and hook lengths.

The 501 is my personal favourite by a mile.
It’s the only one with a decent clutch design as standard.

You won't use anything better than the twinpower xd in 3000 or 4000 for far bank long range wag or bolo style work.
Oozes quality , only used my 4000xg 3 times since October, but have not experienced a reel like it for float work, apart from the mgs versions from 20yrs ago .
Might even try a 3000xg in the new season.if anyone has , please let me know your thoughts 🤔

It was a 4012 TDX Mike.

Over 80% of my fishing over the last 50 years has been trotting - love it - a 4lb+ chub on a light hook length on size 16 hook on a fast flowing Hampshire Avon - ticks almost all of my boxes. I’ve tried so many reels over that time (Fixed spool, centre pins, closed face, front drag, rear drag, fighting drag, finger dab bail arms, Mitchell, Daiwa, Abu, Dam, Shimano, Hardy, Okuma…..) you get the picture. My current go to of choice, which covers most of my trotting needs, are a Daiwa TDR 2508 for anything 11 - 13.5 feet ( normally a Browning Sphere) and a TDR 3012 for my 14 - 17 footers. Reel size is mostly about balance in the hand for me. I’ve a 507mk2 in my bag when it gets very windy or I just fancy a change, and if I’m feeling nostalgic I’ll drag the Mitchell Match out for a bit outing.

Thanks Brian that backs up my thoughts re reel size
As I mentioned previously since I moved to the area in 2003 all my trotting on the Hampshire Avon,The Dorset Stour and The Test
has been with centrepin reels and in fact all my barbel legering on the Avon is with pins.
But recently I have come across a couple of swims where because of the distance and far side trees I felt I wasn't
quite achieving the degree of accuracy required (maybe that's just me) that's why I was asking for opinions on fixed spool reels.
The rod I will probably use is a Hardy Marksman Specialist 15' which I obtained a few months ago and haven't tried out yet and intend to use wagglers instead of my usual avon or chubber floats.
The Daiwa 24 TDR 3012 single handle is the reel that I hope will suit the rod and just hope I find one at a fairly reasonable price
All my other trotting rods are various forms of the Acolytes which I really enjoy using
Regards
Mike

That’s the same as mine - single handle 3012. While I love a pin, there’s not a lots can’t do as well with a fixed spool and rod tip control - and I love a bit of long trotting, i just find the batting/winding back in of a pin just a bit much for me nowadays!
