Best net for barbel

I know there seems to be a trend to use the oval or d shaped nets these days but I realy dont get on with them, I have a Korum and an Insight net in the Garage and they rarely come out unless there is a flood on, I much prefer a 36 inch triangular net with a 4 foot deep mesh so I can properly rest fish and also for the fact I can roll it up and carry it in my rod bag...........I hate carrying these spoon nets, I finish up getting them caught all over the place or tripping over them...........Is it just me??
I have a Korum ruckbag, and just hang my spoon net over the ruckbag :)

Make sure you glue the screws in on your Korum latex spoon or it may work loose as a few have and drift away at a vital moment.

I'v just bought one of the korum nets, it only has 1 allen key screw in the spreader, is this a new design or is it the allen key screw that needs glueing?

After having a similar problem to Ian with my Gardner barbel spoon, that resulted in a large tear in the base after I got snagged in some brambles whilst traveling to my swim. I had a look at the Gardner out reach 36" triangular net. I was pretty impresed with it but i didnt care for the price to much as the net complete with pole retails around the £70 mark, buying the net, spreader and arms alone comes out at £50! I use and like the flexability that I have with the xt extending handle from the same manufacturer and dont require the pole sold when buying the complete unit.

It does however make most other net heads a bargin at around £20!

.....while the Abu-Garcia net IS a very convenient and ingenious net, it is NOT built to last. A mate of mine has had his for one season, and the wear on the thin plastic 'V' block...
The Shakespeare 36" Head ( http://www.tedcarter.co.uk/product.php?pid=shakespeare-specimen-landing-nets ) is a similar cheapie. However....

Mine has netted 150+ fish to 16lb over the last seson or two and still going strong. It has a Metal Spreader Block and I can change the mesh easily.

Hi,

The arms of my abu net snapped whilst netting a fish. Great design, but the product was not robust enough for my barbelling.

I've got a round 30" wychwood net now and so far it's doing well...

Another thumbs down for the Chris Brown net, I bought the Traveller and wasn't impressed at all considering the price so back it went for a refund :)

I never bought one but I do know someone who did, I too wasn't that impressed and neither was he.It went back for a refund also.

A subject close to my heart too. I had a fold up triangular net of unknown make (it was 2nd hand and a present from a mate who had to give up fishing for health reasons).

Sadly one of the arms broke last season and I've gone back to a rigid spoon type net that I bought from Bennets.

The net is fine when you get to the swim - just a pain in the proverbial to transport as it is bulky and tends to attract every bit of undergrowth within a 300 metree radius!!

I'm still looking for a decent triangular fold up net....

i would recommend the RT flip net apart from the build on the block is naff, one use and the arm came out the block, had to glue it back in, nice mesh.

That is a great tip. Mine worked loose last backend but luckily i had a small allen key nearby.

On the subject of carrying this type of net, i either place it inside my chair or when using the Korum ruckbag, i stand the bag on its end with the chair already attached, then sort of push the net over the base of the ruckbag. It works a treat as the net does not come into contact with much because it is on your back and out of the way.;)

Agree it's not built to last multiple seasons no. I buy a new one about every 18 months, which is fine by me as it's cheap.

Changing mesh is absolutely bonkers! Why on earth?

Ian Crooks net is great. If Mr Tucker could build the Abu Garcia one I have it'd be perfect for me however.

The answer to that is simple Simon. The one and only reason for buying the Abu Garcia net is the convenience of the folding frame (which sadly turns out to be pants, quality wise). The net itself is simply not deep enough to adequately rest a decent size barbel before safely returning it. I know of one person who bought the net for the frame, knowing they would have to change the mesh for a decent one....and very soon sold it on when they discovered that this was not practical.

All in all, I would certainly not recommend this net. As you say, if a decent manufacturer could take the design and make a quality version, it would be an outstanding net.

Cheers, Dave.
