Berkley Big Game line

I've bought a bulk spool of Berkley Big Game from Ebay in 10lb clear with the intention of respooling more often. I came to spool up last night and was surprised how thick and stiff it was compared to my usual Ultima Power Plus. It also seems more visible and "white" than the Ultima.

I'm just concerned that it is going to be more visible in the current low water conditions than other line.

Anyone got any thoughts or experiences of it? I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance, keep my confidence up :)

Not long to go now.

To be honest, it's not the strength that concerned me as I know it has a reputation for strength, it's just that it looks a bit heavy duty for the fishing I'm doing, not a lot of finesse - the 10lb looks more like 12 (or even 15). I don't want to spook the fish in a low, clear river.

It's been my line of choice for years Andy. Had plenty of doubles in daylight on it.

Ian.

I tested some 10lb Big Game clear today and it broke at 13lb 3oz. It wont let you down.

another vote here , i love the stuff

i even use the 12lb i have for mainline as hooklinks too , 2 or 3ft long pinned down , no worries

Okay, thanks for the comments, I feel better now! It's gone on the pin and I'll be using it tomorrow, let's hope it gets a good stretching :)

Never let me down, and the knot strength is superb, I also bought some Berkeley in a 8lbs but it's not Big Game and the name escapes me, could by Trilene? very smooth to cast and very supple, in a matt green.:)

Triline Neil, just bought the same for my reel - swear by the stuff.

Been using Big Game clear in 10lb for a couple of seasons now and have complete faith in it. It has never let me down and to be honest hate getting snagged as it is a nightmare to try and break off. Normally find hooklength goes first which is how it should be.

I have been using big game clear in 12lb on my local rivers yorkshire ouse and nidd. Both these rivers have some very snaggy swims and you need to fish close to these snags at times when the river is low. The 10lb snapped on me once when a barbel took me round one of the wooden piles, but the 12lb is thicker so has not let me down yet. I would avoid lower diameter lines on the venues i fish as they wont stand up to as much as big game.

Errrr....lads....are we forgetting the truth about these so called 'super strong' lines? Hearing comments like 'I tested this line and the 10lb broke at 13/14/15lb', so it really is good stuff' certainly seem to point that way :D

The facts of the matter are that, like many lines, this one is ridiculously underrated. For marketing purposes the manufacturers/resellers label their 13/14/15lb line (depending on the company) as 10lb line, just so that they can impress the gullible with the claim that 'Our 10lb line is stronger than others', and so on throughout their range. It has been going on for years, and yet for some reason quite beyond me some people still believe the hype. It breaks at 13/14/15lb because it is 13/14/15lb line :D

There was a concerted effort not so long back to get the manufacturers/resellers to state accurate breaking strains on their lines, and one or two company's have responded, but it the vast majority choose to continue relying on dishonest claims to sell their lines...not without good reason it would seem :D

Take a look at the line strength charts in 'The Tackle Box' catalogues, especially one of the older catalogues where they had a very comprehensive chart covering virtually every line. It will not escape your notice that 'mysteriously' most makes of line in any given category break under test at a remarkably similar diameter/lbs test relationship (their TRUE BS)....which usually bears no resemblance to the STATED BS. True, there are some lines which are SLIGHTLY stronger than others for a given diameter, but the difference is marginal. Obviously as mentioned, the different types of line give differing properties and diameters, which makes a vast difference....but in each category and price range, the lines are pretty consistent.

Match fishermen have been using the diameter of a line as a guage, rather than the stated BS, for many years....because they sussed the con out that long ago. I guess that means match fisherman are smarter than us lot, despite all our comments to the contrary :D:D
