Im currently using a shimano power barbel rod with a shimano 4000 reel for small/medium river fishing.

Im not overly keen on the rod, i did have a look the other day at the drennan specialist avon that was qute nice if a bit tarty with the finish!

Half debating stretching to a Harrison hand made or lots of people have recommended the Daiwa theory...

Any thoughts, i know this has been done to death a bit i did have a search through the old threads first !
 
Tony, the problem is that rods, more than any other item of tackle, are extremely subjective items. You may well get as many different answers to your question as there are members on here.

They are personal things, so what suits one may not suit another, it's all down to personal preferences. I know anglers on here who love Harrison rods...and others who do not like them at all. It's not all down to quality, and there is no doubting the quality of Harrison blanks...it is more to do with your preferred rod action, and only you know that. Try to borrow one and use it, that will be a far better guide.

Free Spirit have some very nice rods . The spirit barbel is about £130 and a nice bit of Kit. But I also saw one of the Korum ones last week and although I've never used one at £50 they have to worth a look at least.
As David said this could go on and one.
 
Agree with Dave,...such a subjective topic Tony.
What suits me,...others will hate.
I've loved using my old 1.5 tc MB Ouse barbel rod on the Dorset Stour this season,...has a medium action and handles big fish with ease,...when I manage to fluke the odd one that is!
On the Hamp Avon I use my Torrix twin tip,..which Bob built,...1.75-2.0 tc.
Lovely rod which handles the extra flow and summer weed a treat.

A favourite all rounder in my armoury is a Greys Prodigy 1.75 tc,...slightly tippier than the others. Does have screw down reel seat however,..which I'm not keen on.
Alps reel seats are my favourite ,...see Bob's custom rods.
There is also a bass rod that I use for serious bait dropping!
Could go on,...but just in case the other half looks in I best stop now!:D

The power barbel comes into its own on bigger rivers, or when there's some water on. The Specialist Avon is a very nice rod, that will be ideal for a summer / smaller river rod, and is as good as any Harrison imo.
 
daiwa theory for me, no doubt there are better rods but having got one a few years ago it was like a magic wand compared to all the other rods i had, lots of feel when playing the fish and i like the slim build of it, got two of the 1.75lb and one 2.25lb, was looking at the lighter 1.5lb and will be getting it next for trotting
love them to bits:)

As my second barbel rod (and been on a budget) i decided to go for a Korum 2lb barbel rod. I cannot fault it for £45 and it casts feeders and leads up to 6oz.
