Barbel Champs to be launched !!!!!!

From what I have read in the Anglers Mail this is being organised by a chap called Patrick Oliver. As well as running a guiding business and accommodation

http://www.threeriversanglingadventures.co.uk/

Patrick is also the Barbel Society's East Midlands Regional Organiser.

Patrick is quoted as saying,

"We've got a rough format in place but are sorting that out with Steve Pope and sponsors at the moment".

You can make of that what you will.

Call me cynical..........

No, that's it....... just call me cynical

Steve {cynical face}

SACRILEGE, next barbel anglers will be advocating the usage of bolt/hair-rigs, designer baits like the carp anglers favourite; boilies and probably even naming fish.... :p:D

Sorry to burst your bubble of ignorant bliss Oh-Smart-One but barbel anglers have been stealing carpy innovations for decades now (no moony smiley, so tongue out will have to suffice).:p

Yea and don't we know it, and look at the Barbel 'scene' just now, so dream on if you really think that you and yours have helped us poor ignorant River anglers.
You really don't get it do you? I mean are you really so up your own back side you are blind to the facts that this is the price that the Rivers will pay for your couldn't give a toss attitude to the finer side of our sport.
So take back your hair rigs, buzzers, boilies, and bivvies but be sure to give us back our Rivers:)

Hi All,

I did wonder how long it would take before a thread would begin on here!! Please dont knock it, one of the main points of the competition is to highlight the handling code as so many barbel are lost nationwide each year as people do not know the correct way to set up to catch them in the 1st place and then look after them once they have caught one i have seen this for myself too many times. So something that is going to highlight the welfare of the species that we all love to fish for in my eyes can only be a good thing.
This competition is aimed at dedicated anglers and to possibly add a new dimension and excitement to their angling year. Its not a MATCH as most people presume.
There are always going to be a few who take a dim view of anything new and i take that on board fully, i have no problem with that. If anybody has any questions they would like to ask me please contact me via pm as i am not one for getting into forum debates.

Many thanks

Patrick Oliver

......and how exactly does a "competition" highlight a handling code? what tosh Patrick.

Its not aimed at dedicated anglers, its aimed at glory hunters, its not what angling is about at all in my world.

Tell the truth Patrick, this is nothing more than a cynical ploy to drum up more publicity for your business. I personally don't have a problem with that but I do think it a little hypocritical to try and dress it up as an exercise in barbel welfare.

I'm also amazed that the Barbel Society would have anything to do with this, particularly as it (the b/s) was originally set up to oppose people who were attempting to use barbel as a commodity.

I think Bernard Venables once suggested that angling should be about man versus fish and that once it's become man versus man then you are fishing for the wrong reasons.

I agree, and it's probably the reason why I find a "barbel championship" about as appealling as I do filling a net with 5 oz dace and roach. As ever though, each to his own.

You really did bring a BIG smile to my face with your puerile little rant...

"You and yours"
What an angler for 30 years, of which everyone of those years has seen me spend ample hours on the river bank, ample enough to call myself a river angler!:p

"Ignorant river anglers"
Neil, not all river anglers are ignorant, only some.;)

"You really don't get it do you?"
Here's a clue; get what?

" I mean are you really so up your own back side you are blind to the facts that this is the price that the Rivers will pay for your couldn't give a toss attitude to the finer side of our sport."
Firstly, any need to be so crass? (reference underlined section)
Blind to what "facts"?
On the basis that you don't know me, have never met me and not even spoken to me. You presume to know a lot about me...
Take my: "couldn't give a toss attitude", couldn't give a toss for what??

"So take back your hair rigs, buzzers, boilies, and bivvies but be sure to give us back our Rivers"
Soz Neil, I'm British born and bred, so "our rivers" are as much mine as anyone elses.:p:)

Neil, I do like your futile little anti carp rants, no substance or rationality but plenty to chuckle over...:)

Barbel Champs......................:(

These last nine months i have been addicted to fishing a stretch of river almost solely for barbel with the occasional foray after roach or chops, sorry, chub.

I have never, in well over thirty years of angling in various guises after various species enjoyed my angling as much as i have recently. I am predominantly a pleasure angler that sometimes becomes addicted (afflicted the girlfriend would say), with one species, with this last season being barbel. I set a target of landing one barbel from a particular stretch and i have pleasantly surpassed my expectations which I have done quietly and without need for adulation. During the hours spent on this water, i have witnessed first hand the glory hunters that the stretch attracts. These range from people publicising captures for weekly awards to people reading the weeklies then fishing the stretch. I would be sure that most rivers have the same thing happening. My questions are;

How pressured would these fish become?

Would these fish maintain condition and growth?

I cannot believe the gall of Patrick Wotzizname. If you really care for this species, shelve the idea now. That would be the best way to help future generations of anglers enjoy barbel fishing.

One might think that "dedicated anglers" generally know how to "handle" barbel?

And don't they have enough excitement simply fishing for barbel anyway?

Sounds on the face of it a recruitment drive for the B.S.

Exploiting their cherished barbus? Tsk, tsk.

Did somebody say Cynical?

They'll be peeing their pants over this one on the "Dark Side". :D
