I’ve sent for some size tens to try for my Tenching Derek. I was disappointed to see that they hadn’t gone smaller than size 10 after I was lead to believe that they would be. The current “normal” wide gape size 10 hook is more like a size 8. I’ll let you know what I think when I get them. 😁

It will be interesting to see how they differ from the ‘standard’ version. Please do report back. I use the standard wide gape 8 quite a bit.

They have brought out a few new designs - one looks like a copy of an ESP Trighammer and the other is a version of the old Fox Series 5 (very long curved shank). The latter are banned on all the stillwaters I fish - but they were brilliant chub hooks back in the day. I stopped using them after I double hooked a few fish.

Certainly will Tim. 👍

As promised here are my first impressions of the new Bank Tackle Specialist size 10 wide gape. Please remember I’m looking at these with my Tench head on and not my Barbel head. I’ve had to wait to post as my original order was picked wrongly and I was originally sent the BT Classic wide gape. A quick email and BT sent out the correct order without a quibble and very quickly.
My first impression when opening the envelope was “I like these”. Thinner in the wire, as expected, nicely formed eyes and smaller for the same size. On my cheap uncalibrated micrometer the Classic measure up at .84mm and the new Specialist at .79mm. You’ll note that the shape is slightly more angular than the Classic. The gape is the same but the shank is shorter which makes the Specialist a smaller hook. The specialist is same size, to my eye, as the size 10 Gardner Covert Talon Tips but thinner!
I’m having some strength tests carried out by a chap in The Tenchfishers who had an article in March 2023 Tenchfisher for those that might have seen it. I’ve asked him to do the tests so as the the testing is consistent. With his permission I’ll let you know the outcome when completed. The photo below shows the two hooks with the third have four maggots in place. I’ll be giving them a field test on Monday.

Unless they do a size 12 wide gape or they've reduced their size 10 in size I won't be interested. I'll carry on with the Gardner size 10 Targets. Amazing hooks. Testimony to that, a double figure Severn Barbel hooked somehow in the root of the dorsal fin and brought up stream in a flood under extreme pressure! Amazing. (No damage done to fish, just my nerves).

I bought a pack of the new BT wide gapes in size 8 as I like the std 8 version. I agree with Bill W's assesment- slightly finer in the wire and a more angular bend.

Had a bit of time today so I took them carp fishing as a quick test. I lashed up super basic knotless knot rigs with a short hair. Bait was my current (experimental) river boilie.

First bite after 74 minutes was a fish about 12lb and the second followed 25 minutes later. A pretty fully scaled fish weighed at 16.04. Then I went home. Glad to catch probably the first 2 carp ever on that bait.

Hooks emerged unscathed. No damage to the points and no bending out of shape. Pity a bigger fish didnt oblige, but they were barbel size I guess. Rod was a Chimera 3 so I could pull quite hard.

PS cant get the pictures to load for some reason.

Been trying the BT specialist gripper size 6 and had 3 come back with a turned over point using solid bags carp fishing
Silty lake bottom , they do seem to blunt easy
Already lost a fish and barely landed an 18

Anyone tried them ?
