Baits of Yesteryear

A post I saw on another fishing forum recently got me thinking of baits of yesteryear that are now discontinued but were amazing fish catchers. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking Dynamite Meaty Marine Groundbait, original Hinders Elips Pellets (with a pool of oil at the bottom of the sack), Van Den Eynde Expo Groundbait (a brilliant tench attractor back in the day). I’d be interested to hear what baits others would bring back into production. The Meaty Marine Groundbait, in particular was superb. I also caught a few on Van Den Eynde Curried Meat in a tin.

Nutrabaits cranberry nutrafruit was a good bait for me, carp and tench loved it. Not sure if you can still get it but never seen it for years.

Also the meaty marine stick mix in a tin.

Rod Hutchinson's Seafood blend! I believe Rod could no longer get the crab meal it contained so production ceased. That was one of the first ready made mixes you could buy ( around 1980 ish). Only used it for Carp but it was rated as a great Tench catcher and would definitely have been a winner for Barbel.
He also did an 'Extract blend' containing meat and bone meals. There was a fruit one ( Mingle fruit) and a sweet one ( Sucre blend). The Sucre made a very good floater cake! 🙂

Ah yes Seafood Blend. The first time I used it was at Walthamstow reservoirs around 81/2 ish. First time I had ever made a boilie and the first time using the hair rig. My rod was almost pulled in twice that day, went home the day a changed young Man...Those early days for my (and others) Carp fishing was drenched in mystery and amazing excitement and never again have I felt that in angling.

Campbells meatballs in onion gravy. Wye Barbel bait bar none in the nineties and noughties. Just ask the Macclesfield lads who fished the red lion every year ! Pork meatballs that stayed on the hook with just a bit of grass stalk as a stop. Never the same when Campbells changed the recipe to chicken meat. Found a couple of old tins recently - not risked opening them yet 🤢🤢😂😂

Hi men,

Mainline Grange will never be beaten . I got on early and used to drive to the owners bungalow and pick it up . We sat talking about the freezing weather we was having and Kev said put some in a cardboard box in the foot well of the car to heat them up , cast them out and don't turn your back on the rods , he was right 😂. Then came the ready rolled freezer version after years of rolling my own I carried on for a while , then spoke to them a chipped up in my car and filled a freezer full 😄. The baits that followed are all good , but .......
