Hi chaps. Fishing on a small pressured low stock river at the moment. Currently employing small pellet particle style tactics in the low water conditions. With autumn and winter just around the corner I am starting to think about introducing some boilies soon. As a partiality converted carper, I have some mainline New Grange at my disposal. This is very different from most stereotypical barbel baits imo as it is not fish based so will hopefully not be treated with as much caution as more "normal" baits. Has anyone used this bait for barbel with success, as it's a great carp catcher. Thanks in advance.

Baits come and go, Krill is "flavour of the month" at the moment it seems.

Mainline Grange has been going for years hasn't it (whether it's ingredients have stayed the same I'd be doubtful as many baits are alleged to change, but maybe Mainline are a class above that? :))

For loads of older (but still valuable) info, try the "old" incarnation of BFW Barbel Fishing World forums Forums and in the "search all" box enter "grange" (or "mainline grange" to narrow the search) and hit the return button.
 
Thanks Paul. Krill is indeed the ingredient of the moment. The new Grange is different from the old Grange csl. Will have to get the laptop out to do the search as the search function does not appear to be compatible with android.
 
Mainline are top class baits. If I could only ever use one bait for barbel it would be Activ8. But I'm talking about the original Activ8, not sure the current one is the same. I'm sure the barbel will eat the new grange Robert, and if you're not getting bites I would say it's because they aren't there rather than your bait choice.
 
Anyone tried the Bowler Attracta boilies or paste?

Sort of follows on from the other bait thread running . Location is the key , and almost every time you get that right ( and i dont ) the bait is not the major factor in getting a bite . BUT , if anyone conciders bait as irelivant then they are missing out , even by a small amount. All fish recognise their food sorce , or they would die , and if you believe that then offering a good bait thats attractive to them , that they like , can only help . I am talking more in autumn / winter when things slow down , and people turn to boilies / pastes , and paste covered hookbaits . In this situation i alway try and make sure that there is as big a liquid leak off as possible , this is in a heavy glugged hookbait , a paste made up with matching liquids to smear over it , and the whole thing dunked in the glug . There are so many food sorce liquids out there that are good for the fish , attractive , and just might buy a bite in hard times .

Marks advice above is sound . As the river is pressurised I would establish what other anglers are usings and avoid that ,as although barbel are not the brightest of fish they can , in certain circumstances, be wary of certain baits particularly in a river with a small head of barbel, this may be a significant factor if the few fish present have been caught several times on a particular type of bait . This said , as Mark outlines , finding the fish is the key , once you have done that the type of bait becomes less important . A general maxim that seems to be true is chose a time when the river is coloured / flooded as fish will be less choosy for obvious reasons . Garlic spam or bunches of worms can work well in these circumstances , or indeed anything that stinks .
 
Krill/crab pellets

I decided on these pellets this season and they have caught on all the rivers I have fished. Single 8mm when its hard or when fishing through the day and larger 14mm at night or in coloured water. The bream love the krill and crab pellets and also roach love the smaller crab pellets. I use micro's and 4mm krill as feed and hemp.

I used and highly rated the original Grange from day one, right up until it changed....which was a good few years back now. Once it changed, it was not a patch on the original, so I had wondered what this new incarnation might be like. I wondered if perhaps the ingredient that had become unavailable (which was the apparent reason for the change years ago) was back on the market, and all was back as was...what a happy day that would be! Sadly, I found out the other day that my hopes and wishes were not granted at all :eek:

There is a carp water just down the road to my house, and I walk my pup there occasionally (as you do :D) One angler I spoke to the other day just happened to be using the new Grange, and let me have my first look/smell/taste of the stuff...and I can tell you that it bares no resemblance to the original whatsoever. It had a strong smell of chocolate/cocoa powder...it even looked like cocoa powder on the outside. Whether it works or not I couldn't say...either way, it is NOTHING like the original :(

Needed some 14mm boilies urgently for a sesh so picked up some Crave with and hookbait glug. Only had the one barbel on them but stacks of big Chub.
