Avon scales

Test them at various weights through their range - just because they are bang on at a certain weight does not mean they will be correct at others.
Cheers
Bob

Yeah i will do that Bob next time I go shopping.
They have hardly been used so can't imagine them been out but will test them on a few different items.
Cheers
Wayne

Not sure alot of people seem to use flyweight or something?
Thanks

Can anyone recommend a good reliable set of digitals?
I was fortunate enough to catch and weigh a large river carp 2 weeks ago and have since discovered my Rapala digitals could be upto 1lb light.....

As Iv been reviewing scales for a while Iv read some good reviews on the fox digital?

There is an old review on the review section by Bob Gill for the Salter Electro Samson Digital Scales. Not the cheapest, but good.

Cheers, Dave.

I don't understand why all the fuss about how accurate whatever scales you may be using are, why does it have to so important to you Wayne?
... surely their are other factors that are so more important to take from catching a barbel, an ounce or so either way should be of little consequence.
Why do we seem to get bogged down with such trivail matters.
You seem to be a competent angler without all this burden, just relax:)

Neil, I would agree that we do seem to make big importance of weight and accuracy, for me there is a real desire to better my best, to improve and advance, that is my thing, it may not be yours...........
It is my opinion that like anything else, if I pay good money for something I want it to work properly, if I paid 80 quid or whatever for Fox Digital scales I would expect them to be spot on accurate, otherwise I might as well buy a 15 quid set from argos!!

£15 from Argos? You could three for that sort of money:p
Of course I want to beat my 'best' but it sounds a tad OCD Ian, I really thought it was a wind up in going around the supermarket testing the Avons, apparently not:rolleyes: This whole thing has got out of hand if you ask me, suffice I do check my R.Hs' when I think I need to , but again I do not get the things out of the pouch unless I think it is worth weighing, sadly they are not used much lately:(
All I am saying is that we do seem to be a little bound by the fear of appearing on the bank with the 'wrong' tackle scales or haversack. It's a wonder how some of us actually have the courage to venture out at all:)

Hi Neil, I half agree with what your saying but me personally I believe in getting hold of the best tackle for the job in hand, but also in my opinion fishing over the last few years has got more like a fashion parade rather than fishing it does seem nowadays it's about having the best and top gear not catching fish. Sadly the days have gone when tackle wasn't an issue for example a fantastic fisherman (Ivan Marks) who's tackle was all over the place with birds nest in his box and broken floats etc by my god he could catch fish. As goes for the scales my aim in life is to break the barbel record and I believe a good set of scales is a Must for my aim. With the learning I'm doing the information I'm taking on and young age I am I would like to confidently say I will do that whatever it takes be it sat on a river in my boxer shorts in Baltic conditions I will do it might take me 20-30 or even 40 year but I will eventually do it ;);).
Kind regards

Wayne I wish you luck, but you should be careful what you wish for, and after catching the biggest barbel that has ever been caught, what do you do then?
Besides I am not even that confident that we will ever see any more more barbel of the size that the Ouse threw up before the Otters had 'em, for these fish were arguably virtually 'farmed' fish in all the bait that was going in.
However if you do get the record from the Trent I will personally drive up there and buy you a pint or two, sadly don't think we will ever share a pint under those circumstances, but you have to dream.:)

Cheers Neil. As goes for what I do after well.... (live the dream) well people may think I'm been stupid but it sounds like you seem to think there's not a barbel out there bigger than 21.1 because of the increase in the otter population but we all know there's a bigger fish out there than the record. I will look forward to that day Neil ;);).

Neil - same too. I used to be preoccupied with accuracy quite a few years ago - now weighing fish is a ball ache. Nothing better than just catching & returning fish, & wetting the sling on the very odd occasion. A few ounces here or there. Chances of a record - possible or probable...

For info - I have used one pair of avons for the last 20 years. They have been taken to their limit numerous times, the hook has been straightened & the handle broken. I checked it two years ago using pellets weighed on digital scales thinking that it might be weighing on the light side. After all the abuse they were pretty much bang on.

There tough things those Avon scales , I had a set that were run over by a tractor , shattered the casing but a bit of repair work with some gaffer tape and they still weighed accurately for years afterwards

A good quality spring balance will always be a better buy, and I concur that weighing is a trauma for both parties:) and best left for the odd decent fish.

The good Doctor has pronounced , and I am sure he is correct . I was rubbish at physics anyway :)

Mike, water expands as it freezes and turns into ice....that is why milk bottles break if left on the step in deep winter (if you are old enough to remember milk bottles on the step :D)

So, although the pint of water would have expanded way out of the top of a pint beer glass if frozen in that, it would still weigh the same.

However, if you were to carve the expanded lump off of the top of that glass, so you had a pint in volume of ice....it would weigh less than the original pint of water.

So you were kind of right...a pint (Volume) of ice does weigh less than a pint (V) of water :p

Cheers, Dave.
