Avon scales

Iv just bought some avons mk7 and just wondered wondered what I could use to test them does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks

Go to Tesco's, buy a 2.5 kg sack of spuds, but weigh them on the scales in the veg department so you know precisely what they weigh. Also buy some bananas (loose) as these will be weighed at the cashout and will appear on your receipt. You could also buy several cans of soup and weigh those in the veg dept, keeping a record. Then you can play around at home, adding various items one at a time and see what your scales are telling you.

I once attended an area PAC meeting and several members had brought their scales to check against some fixed weights. I had a cheap pair of digital Fladen's at the time, and on the 10kg weight (10000g) I was only 40g out!!

Good ideas Anthony I do the same lucky I live next to a small village store which really helps. They all have to comply with weights and measures so their scales are normally bang on. Last used my Avons weighing an 11lb 4oz barbel for a mate both are avons read the same .

Great idea Anthony I didn't quite do that instead Iv actually took my scales into asda whipped em out and started weighing everything lol. Looked like id been let out of the mental home walking round asda with a set of avons lol.

While we are on the subject, has anyone any comments on the accuracy of fox digitals?

My barbel pan net weighs 1lb 3oz on a set of 25 year old Avons, but only 1lb on a set of fox digi's. 3oz is quite a difference on a 1lb weight.

I tend to trust the Fox's, but I actually havnt verified their weight with anything which is calibrated.

any thoughts?

Darren, I am really struggling to get the water to stay on the hook, everytime I pout it on it goes straight down the sink, I think I am doing something wrong :D

Lol I thought how can you weigh a pint of water ?? Ants ideas have gotta be up there ;).
Iv also got to find a really padded soft case for them does anyone have an idea on a very good case/pouch.
Thanks

A few years a go Bob Roberts , I think it was, and his Don Valley Specimen Group chums had a night in BR's garage and did some detailed experiments on the accuracy of various different sets of scales , Reubons [ none digital ] , Avons , Fox digitals , Waymasters etc . This was written up in I think in Coarse Fisherman magazine . I seem to recall the fox digitals came out on top as the most accurate across various weight ranges . Personally I won't bother with digital scales as many have reported failure at the critical moment , battery's going flat is the usual reason , they tend to struggle in very cold weather as well , don't know why

I remember that article,it suckered me into buying some 2nd hand Fox digitals which with new batteries were very inaccurate. My local tackle shop offered to send them to Fox for recalibration, which they did.On collection I discovered Fox had replaced them for new for free. How bad's that I thought, but on comparing them with my old Avons and a borrowed set of Avons, they too were also very inaccurate. They were promptly traded in for some Reuben Heatons. The Avons are fine, but with a decent carp save the bother of counting the needle revolutions.I'm afraid in my book the Fox digitals fall into the same category as their baitrunners,it's marked "Very disappointing".

Pete.

If Martin bowler, Matt Hayes, John Wilson etc are still using avons after all these years there obviously the scales to have IMO :):)

Iv just got back from my scale testing at the local tesco bought my bananas and weighed them at 2lb 8oz on the salter scales got home and weighed them and they were bang on good old avons. However the self scan checkout printed them at 1.165kg = 2.5lb so from what I'm gathering we are all saving ;);) I paid 68p for 8 bananas lol.

Test them at various weights through their range - just because they are bang on at a certain weight does not mean they will be correct at others.
Cheers
Bob
