Avon Scales Repairs

Mike Window

Senior Member & Supporter
I have a MK VI set of Avon scales in pristine condition except the zeroing wheel on the back does not work.
Anyone know if and where they can be repaired please?

Metroweigh 0208 787 7080 was the company that took over Avon but not cheap around £30 plus the postage . Unless its a rare 8lb set you could probably buy a pair cheaper. They are very simple to strip down and it is probably worth taking apart yourself and then spraying with a lubricant or similar. Clive Shipman would the man with most understanding on here and probably anywhere when it comes to Avons. If you use the search facility on BFW you can see other Avon threads.

The wheel on the back is a simple mechanical system where it draws a threaded bar up and down and puts or releases tension on the two springs. I can’t see it being a difficult job to at least diagnose why it’s not working.
Send them to me I’ll have a look at them for you. It’s not a specialist repair job. Worst case scenario you’ve stripped the threads

Mike they are sorted.
you had a slightly damaged thread where the hand wheel went up and down and you’ll also notice I’ve taken out those two sticky points where they would lock up momentarily until enough force pulled them through. The pinion gear behind the needle was quite rusty and the needle itself was a little bit bent. I’ve had em in bits, cleaned em up.
Ive tested them.
surprisingly for their age and design I can’t get them to read anything but bang on now with known weights right up to 8lb.
is that zero point good for ya! Nice scales.
very rare. Hang on to those. 👍🏻

Hi Richard, are you able to service Avons ? Got an old set that need a look at cheers
Chris you can’t service them unfortunately. They are either working properly or not. You certainly don’t want to be blathering them in oil and grease. If they have a fault then let me know what it is and I’ll make some suggestions. Don’t be frightened of them though Chris. They are so simple it would be quite insulting to call yourself an Avon scale expert. and they are not going to fall to bits when you open them up. If you want me to look at them, tell me the problem and send them to me 👍🏻
