Are You Good Enough? Take the EA Test!

I am proud to say I only got one correct according to the social Nazis of the present EA, and that was because I wanted then to use that miracle of modern technology the telephone rather than having a meeting. Unfortunately my experience of the EA is they love meetings.
I have sent the Q&A to my MP as yet another example of how this body wastes its time and cash on pointless political gesture politics rather than getting on with the job. I continue to encourage this coalition government to hand over the EA's responsibilities to voluntary organisations who are actually interested in protecting the environment rather than being "nice guys".
Its about time the EA actually supported its staff in taking on polluters rather than consulting with them.....when actually telling people it is their responsibility not to despoil the environment is wrong you know that something is very wrong indeed.

You work for the EA

That must mean you are in the 'Flood prevention' department...because as far as I am aware, those vandals are the only branch of the EA that actually do anything .....:D

Cheers, Dave.

Guilty as charged! I will qualify that by saying my "area of expertise" is alien invasives, so I don`t weild a chainsaw these days. What do you mean "vandals" I resemble that remark.

What a load of rubbish! 8/8 and i didnt even read the questions after the " lets save the cuddly otters one!" shows why our waterways are in such a state, and why polluters get away with so much!
thanks to the trust, they don't, join, join, join.
;)

Alien invasives....so, why did you stop weilding a chain saw? You could have worked wonders with one of those in persuading them to stop catching and eating our fish :D:D:D

Head down, helmet on :D

Cheers, Dave.

I'm very surprised the word 'diversity' didn't come up,
after all, that's the modern catch word to use these days, drives me mad!!!

That surprised me too, plus no statement about being an equal ops, non-discriminatory organisation who would particularly welcome applicants from ethnic minorities as they may be over represented by indigenous male employees. A stupid questionnaire like that should always include the optional answer of "none of the above"

Because of the huge number of great chub and barbel swims I destroyed with my Husky 262xp, I developed HAVS syndrome and you`ll be pleased to know am no longer allowed to use any power tools ( at least that`s what I tell the missus ).

Unfortunately I don`t have a remit to deal with "those" alien invasives, much as I`d love too, as a Thames angler I have more reason than most to thin their ranks. I think 5mm of Reglone stem injected just above the ankle would solve many problems.

i liked the play again facility proving the EA see wasting our money and the state of the rivers as just a game . i wasn`t shocked by the correct answers after being told by an EA bailiff that its a waste of time checking rod licences on the trent because all you lads have one anyway and there aren`t enough of you to make it worth while so he was going to stick to the commercial lakes . proving they were just going for the easy option to maximise revenue

This is one of the reasons I left the Agency - so called big (PC) talk & very little substance. Simon, you are absolutely bang on with that comment. Other than the Trent weirs & Dunham I would place a significant bet that one could fish a decade & never get ones license checked.

Cheers, Jon

That may all be sadly very true Jon, but could you just refresh our memories here....approximately how many inspectors are there to check the tickets of more than a million anglers on any given weekend day?

Cheers, Dave.

In the Lower Trent region (Leics, Notts, Derbs, N. Lincs & South Yorkshire) when I left 5 years ago there was 2 full time bailiffs. There was 3 full time (so-called senior) fisheries officers dealing with more technical issues but would also help when they had time.

When I started in 98, the team which had the most successive year in year budget cut backs was the fishery department. They are paid literally peanuts & I would find it difficult to survive on that wage & I rarely want for anything with low overheads.

The Lower Trent Area manager of 2005 even wanted to close Calverton Fish Farm - an unnecessary overhead apparently that does not pay its way!! Thankfully this bit of brainstorming (over morning tea dear boy) was not seen through.

I cannot comment on a national level. One could submit this question to the Agency but I would imagine its pretty much the same unless its prime game fishing region. Weekend fishing equals over time & more double manning. Its all down to a risk based approach - a certain resource for a given result (as already been highlighted)

Cheers, Jon

For info - Lower Trent Area was one of 36 areas in the country. I think they have changed the Areas since & have centralised more. Local knowledge down the pan!!

Sorry Ray, didn't get past Q1! Puked up on my laptop after reading the drivel and couldn't continue, especially after finding yet another dead 'double' with it's head eaten by an Otter on Severals today and reading that the toss pots have issued Fyke Net licences on the Avon. Sorry mate must try harder!!!

I wouldn't worry keith, they probably issued those to try and starve the otters out :D:D

Cheers, Dave.

They should get their prioritys right and put the licence paying angler first and worry what is happening to the fish stocks .

fact is, they don't give a damn, commercial carp puddles are the future, as thats where alot of anglers go these days.

True on both scores there David. I am not sure as to what cut backs will ensue over the forthcoming year(s) with the EA - but all non statutory responsibilities will be dropped like a stone. All non urgent priorities will be left at the bottom of the inbox & if you thought it was difficult to get a response from the EA in office hours, outside these no chance - unless it has real significance &/or media coverage.

well, i did the quiz, got 8/8, but still think there's a lot to be addressed about their priorities, possibly a levy on commercial fisheries to help fund restocking of natural waters with less fished for species so as to maintain better biodiversity and when the current trend for carp puddles is passed there are still fisheries in place to come back to.
