Anyone use 4000d baitrunners with an i-Power?

Owing to user error / sticking clutch meaning I lost a fish I really didn't want to lose yesterday, I might have to bite the bullet and fork out for some of the new 4000d shimano baitrunner reels.

Slightly concerned they are a bit small and light so could anyone tell me please if they feel ok balance wise on an i-power rod?

Many thanks.

Simon,

I am about to buy a new pair of reels but have decided to go for the XT 4000 FA rather than the 4000d, I have been quoted £160 delivered for two from Eric's Angling and they have loads in stock.

The 4000d look too glitzy for me!!

I invested in a pair of XT4000FA's for this season to replace my aged 5010's. Been very pleased with them so far, though they don't have the same outright cranking power of my old 3500B's the clutch is far better than the rear-drag reels.

I use a 4000d with a Hardy marksman avon rod on smaller rivers, so not chucking out big weights a huge distance. The reel is light, but then so is the rod, so they balance well. Not sure how the i-power compares.
I would not say its a small reel, but neither would I call it 'carp' large. It is very smooth, feels powerful when playing a fish and the clutch is a very smooth and proactive tool for playing fish with. All in all it instills confidence.

hope this helps.

Simon,
Been using the 4000d since they first came out. Lovely reels and lighter than the 3500B.
A couple of things to consider - no spare spool (one will set you back £35), line clip is a bit fiddly and bait runner lever works at a different position than most Shimanos.
Have fitted one to an i-power and feels good, although been using the 4000d mostly on 11' Torrix and occasionally 12' Torrix. Both plain tips and spliced in quivers.
Hope this helps,
Bob

Simon,

I've had a 4000D for a couple of seasons now and its very light but tough. I use Chimera 2's which are slightly heavier than the Ipower I believe but they balance on them fine.

Simon,
I have 4000Ds and XTFAs. I'd recommend that you try to get a look at the XTFAs before you go the whole hog on 4000Ds. I believe that the XTFAs are only a whisker away from the 4000Ds in terms of performance but improve on them in terms of coming with a spare spool and the spools have a good line clip. The only possible fly in the ointment, if you don't like them, is the double handle.

Simon,

I think the performance of the 4000FA is good but i don't like the thin, weak bail arm. Mine are now both bent due to the rough treatment they receive carried on made up rods on quivers.

They are the only shimanos i have experienced this problem with.

Graham,
just put a 4000D side by side with my XTFA. The bail on the XTFA appears to be fractionally thicker.

Had my eye on a new ebay pair of 4000d's, but they went for £196.

Erics do a new pair for £220 as I'd rather have a single handle.

Approx £220 more than I've got, but what price a barbel eh?

I actually don't want to calculate the average cost per barbel figure!

So far this year, for me that would amount to £220 per barbel...and worse, about £75 per pound :D:D

It can only get better....I think :p

Cheers, Dave.

I do like single handles too, problem is I have the XTB5500 reels with single handles and they will not stay folded, pain in the aris!!! I really don't like the glitzy, gold spools on the 4000d.

I have played with both reels in the tackle shop and as Chris said, apart from the double vs single handle the only other real difference is the fact that the 4000d has a cheap plastic line clip and the XT4000FA has a proper metal one and 2 spools, otherwise both very similar............the XT is a nice fishing green colour :)

Simon, save your money and get a pair of DL4000FA's if you are concerned with cost. I have a pair and use them with my Torrix's. The balance feels right. They'll handle those Loddon doubles no problem.

I use 4000D's and love them; however I use them with 11 ft, 1.5lb TC specialist rods and they are a perfect balance. For work on bigger rivers I have a couple of 12ft 1.75lb Torrix and personally I prefer to use bigger reels (Shimano 5000 XTEA's), which for me are better balanced with the longer
/heavier rods; better for chucking out/winding in big feeders too. Have you checked out the 6000D's, which you can now get with a less chunky handle grip?

I got a 4000D on a 11ft 2lb torrix, which isn't an overly delicate rod, and it's blooming lovely. I'd just get on. Think I got one from Climax for £110 inc postage.

I can second the 4000 DLFAs, really nice reels that feel solid in the hands.
But if you want the best...........get a speedia!:p

So I have just taken deliver of 2 x 4000ds.

And I have also just taken delivery of 2 x 6000ds.

2 will be going back to the shop for a refund once I decide whether the 4000 is too small, or the 6000 is too big.

I'd say 5000 would be about perfect but typically don't make that do they?!

I think the 6000d being not much heavier than my current 5000's will get the nod. Will wait to see how they feel and balance on the rod, but most of my fishing is rods on rests for days at a time so weight not such an issue.

Clutch is great.
